What is WHDI?

Wireless Home Digital Interface (WHDI) is a consumer electronic standard for a wireless HDTV connectivity throughout the home. WHDI revolutionizes the home multimedia experience by wirelessly delivering interactive HD video from any device to any display.

WHDI is supported and driven by AMIMON, Hitachi Ltd., LG Electronics, Motorola, Samsung Group, Sharp Corporation and Sony.

What is the difference between WHDI technology and the other wireless options available on the market?

The technology enables wireless delivery of uncompressed HDTV throughout the home with video rates of 1080p and beyond – WHDI technology is the only technology that promises the delivery of 4K2K resolution by next year. Using the 5Ghz unlicensed band, it surpasses competitive technologies by providing outstanding and consistent picture quality equivalent to wired HDMI™ cable, low latency (less than 1ms), multi-room availability and low power consumption.

When compared to other wireless options such as the Intel’s WiDi technology (which has noticeable HD quality issues and limited interactive use cases given its ~600ms of latency), WHDI has clearly superior video quality, reliability and latency. Additionally, WHDI has proven to be more reliable and flexible than 60Ghz technologies such as WiGig and WirelessHD because of their inability to pass through barriers and walls.

What is AMIMON Pro Product Line?

AMIMON Professional product line harnesses the power of WHDI wireless technology and takes it even further to customize high end products specifically to the professional market requirements.

AMIMON Pro allows for customizable solutions in the professional market, where using off the shelf options will not meet customer requirements. Professional products often have specific performance requirements that are different or more demanding than consumer applications.

For example, professional A/V production equipment requires specific audio and video formats (e.g. HD SDI or native formats), and medical solutions must be exceptionally robust. Operation temperature and reliability are additional critical factors for many professional markets.

What extra features does AMIMON PRO offer for the professional market?

AMIMON Pro delivers the same wireless, high-quality, no-latency video as WHDI standard and much more. It is tailored to the specific professional solution requirement. A good example is  the amazing ability of Amimon Pro to multicast and synchronize video to 256 screens simultaneously without affecting the video quality or adding to its zero-delay performance.

AMIMON Pro can also be configured to be more robust than WHDI CE brand. It works with more channels and more frequencies. AMIMON Pro works with DFS, regulated by the FCC, and it can work with external antennas and therefore is latency-free in tougher conditions and locations.

The AMIMON brand ensures that the professional market users will have the direct support of the WHDI creator and will not have to work with a third party.

What is the maximum range of WHDI and can it go through walls? Is there a difference with the professional version?

WHDI can travel through walls with a range of up to 30 meters.  Amimon Pro can achieve longer ranges by implementing higher power or additional antenna solutions as required to meet product specifications.

For example, one of the biggest advantages of AMIMON Pro for the digital signage market is its ability to synchronize through walls (and with many displays simultaneously). This gives digital signage professionals the ability to easily configure new installations, and to create large, full wall solutions.

WHDI non-compressed solution with its zero-latency capability means that all these screens are always in-sync to each other without the need to any further expensive and cumbersome synchronization HW & SW.

Where can I buy WHDI products

A large number of our WHDI products are available at Amazon.Com. Other retail options can be found in the Product section of our site.

Please notice that these are intended for consumer use and not for the professional markets use. They include the CE grade solutions only.

Where can someone from the professional side buy the AMIMON pro chip board?

Direct from AMIMON

Amimon Pro solutions can be purchased only directly from Amimon or companies under specific Amimon license. Professional users will be able to find Amimon Pro products at leading professional equipment suppliers as part of their professional product lines.

  • Stryker Endoscopy offers its WiSE HDTV Surgical Display
  • IDX are providing their WEVI CW-5HD-AB wireless professional camera extender.

Which audio formats does WHDI support?

WHDI supports all audio formats, from the simple 2 channel stereo 44.1KHz, and to HD audio including 8 discrete channel, and optional 192KHz configuration.

Why should custom installers use wireless?

Wireless it truly the best option for custom installers. Wireless in custom installations reduces installation time, complications and mistakes – while at the same time giving the installer the flexibility to deliver the best solution. It removes the need for drilling holes and measuring cables, which makes installation easier in rented home and the homes of cautious owners or designers who want to relocate their television

Custom installations require reliable video link as the wireless needs to pass through many walls without latency. This is why the AMIMON Pro WHDI technology is an incomparable option. Wireless prevents having a return trip for the installation team and reduces end product returns to virtually zero, saving time and money.

What do you see happening with wireless in 2013?

Two trends are emerging for wireless over the next several years.  First, on the consumer side we are increasingly going to see portable/mobile devices such as laptops, tablets and even phones become sources of HD content.  These devices will wirelessly connect to the TV and consumers will grow increasingly comfortable with this model.

On the professional side, we will see more and more wireless products as different market segments become exposed to the capabilities of high-quality, wireless HD transmission.  Wireless technologies of the past (and many of those of the present) could not meet these demanding customer requirements.  That has changed and WHDI will continue to lead a wireless revolution.

What do you plan to announce in 2013?

We will see products that achieve increased performance using less bandwidth, fewer antennas and lower power.  We will also see further semiconductor integration, reducing chip size and driving down costs.  This will enable more and more solutions, including those with a greatly reduced form factor.
