1. What is the Energi TriPak and how does it help save energy?
The Energi TriPak is a family of products that work together to save energy by utilizing occupancy sensing, daylight harvesting, personal control, and high-end trim. These components, when combined, can save up to 60% of lighting electricity usage, increase occupant comfort and productivity, control virtually all loads, and reduce installation and programming costs.
The Energi TriPak consists of Radio Powr Savr wireless occupancy, vacancy and daylight sensors, Pico wireless controls, Maestro Wireless dimmers and switches, and PowPak modules. Occupancy/vacancy sensors can be ceiling- or wall-mounted, allowing for optimum sensing coverage. Pico wireless controls come in multiple button configurations, and can be used as handheld, wall-mount or tabletop controls. Load controllers are available to dim or switch most load types, from incandescent lamps to EcoSystem digital dimming ballasts. Contact-closure options are also available. The products are designed for retrofit installations, so minimal wiring is necessary.
2. What makes the Energi TriPak unique among lighting control solutions?
The Energi TriPak is a simple, cost-effective energy-saving light control retrofit solution that uses wireless technology to minimize installation labor and materials. Most lighting control solutions require installation of new wiring between sensors, controls and load controllers, which can make installation in a retrofit installation complicated and expensive. By using Lutron reliable Clear Connect technology to connect the devices, lighting control can be installed in minutes. 3. Can you outline some typical applications for Energi TriPak?
Typical applications for the Energi TriPak include commercial spaces such as conference rooms, private offices, training rooms, open office space, and any other area that benefits from reduced energy consumption. In many of these spaces, lighting is on at full brightness even when the space is unoccupied or when there is abundant daylight. Energi TriPak products can reduce the electricity consumption during these times, and can also help occupants to be more productive by allowing them to set their own optimal lighting.
4. Do you have some real world installations or case studies with energy saving results to share?
One installation local to Lutron’s headquarters in Coopersburg, PA is in a roughly 5000sqft open office space consisting largely of cubicles with some perimeter offices. The space was already outfitted with occupancy sensors; however, they controlled the space as a whole, frequently causing the lights to stay on even when only a single employee was present.
After the installation, the space’s occupancy sensors now control specific areas of light so at times of the day when some of the office is vacant lights in those regions will go off. Daylight sensors were added so that during the day the electric light is dimmed, taking advantage of the large windows and skylights to further reduce electricity usage. Furthermore, each cubicle was outfitted with a wireless controller which allows for personal control of the two fixtures above every cubicle.
5. What do you expect the financial payback would be on a typical installation?
Payback for the Energi TriPak varies depending on the space and the products selected, however a private office with a Maestro Wireless switch and an occupancy sensor can pay back in as little as two and a half years. In other less frequently occupied spaces such as bathrooms; the payback can be even shorter.
6. What is Clear Connect technology, and why does Lutron use it?
Clear Connect RF Technology is Lutron’s latest advancement of our highly reliable RF technology that ensures seamless communication between our system components. First released in 1997, Lutron RF products and systems operate on a quiet frequency band that is essentially free of interference. A dedicated network ensures communication between systems devices are reliably delivered, and group commands ensure a smooth, simultaneous system response.
7. Does Lutron use any other wireless technologies that interface with products from other manufacturers (i.e. Zigbee, z-wave etc.)?
Lutron has a number of products that can interact with other systems via an Ethernet connection.
8. What is XCT technology and how does it work?
Lutron XCT technology uses a proprietary signal processing technology to dramatically improve the performance of passive infrared sensors. The algorithms in Lutron sensors with XCT technology accurately distinguish the difference between background noise and actual motion so that the detection threshold can be lowered without the danger of increasing false tripping. Occupancy decisions are made solely on the basis of actual movement in the spaceâ€”even fine motion like fingers typing on a keyboard, turning the page of a report, or writing on a tablet. Lutron XCT technology enables the sensor to retain high sensitivity to fine motion without creating the “false on” conditions that waste energy, or the “false off” conditions that leave occupants in the dark.
9. Is XCT specific for the Energi TriPak solutions or is it used in other Lutron products?
XCT Technology is integral to all Radio Powr Savr occupancy and vacancy sensors, which are compatible with all of Lutron’s Clear Connect enabled systems.
10. Does Lutron have other energy management and saving product lines?
Lutron has a broad range of energy saving product lines. These include the GRAFIK Eye QS and Energi Savr Node products for sophisticated control of commercial spaces, the Quantum system for commercial whole building lighting management, and Radio Ra 2 and Homeworks QS systems for powerful lighting control in residences.
11. Are there any future plans or developments in the energy arena that you can share with us?
