Content Insider #158 - The New Consumer

New Consumer, New Tools Equals New Normal You should really be excited. The government - no matter what country you live in - recently reported that the last few unsteady years are behind us and things are better and getting better. That's government speak. Actually, the downturn lasted so long it changed the consumer landscape, so the next few years deserve their own name..the new normal. Jason explained, "Then do something about it. Everything you need is in there." We're frugal in areas we never thought twice about before. "This is Jason Bourne. You are nine hours behind the toughest target you have ever tracked. Now I want everyone to sit down, strap in, and turn on all you've got. That would mean now." - Pamela Landy (Joan Allen), The Bourn Ultimatum (2007), United Pictures

Home Golf Simulators

A golf simulator typically includes tracking technology of some kind (machine vision, infrared, radar, etc). The tracking, along with the game software make up the foundation of the golf simulator. The other major elements include an enclosure, a projector, a screen, a touchscreen and computer.

Home Theater for the Holidays

Once you choose your room, decide between hanging a flat-screen HDTV or a video projection screen and corresponding video projector.  The most popular aspect ratio is 16:9 widescreen.  A projector/screen combo will help provide that authentic movie theater experience and is the recommended solution for a dedicated home theater.  If you plan on watching lots of television in addition to movies, then a HDTV may be the better option, as projector bulbs have limited lifespans and are expensive to replace. How to Achieve Cinema Quality 7.3 HD Surround

There are 5.1 and 7.1 surround sound systems, then there's PROCISE 7.3 HD Digital Surround Sound. The disparity in cinematic sound quality - and the resulting home theater experience - is equivalent to the difference between driving a Corolla and a Corvette. By any measure, it's noticeable in a big way from beginning to end.

How to Setup Your Own Remote Online BitTorrent Client

One of the problems with using BitTorrent and P2P is that it consumes a considerable amount of your Internet connection's bandwidth. Most broadband users have limited upload speed that also affects their download speed since P2P is all about sharing equally. This means that you, in general, are not allowed to download more than you can upload to other peers. One way to get around this problem, and other problems associated with P2P, is to run the BitTorrent client on an online server hard drive. An online BitTorrent client works similar to a BitTorrent client installed on your own computer, but it is not limited by your broadband speed. You will therefore notice a huge increase in download speed when using an online server as a BitTorrent client.

More Test Equipment in Your Pocket

Well, it's been awhile since my last TIP. Sorry for the very long delay but there have been BIG changes since that last TIP that got me totally preoccupied. The problem was I completely ran out of TIP ideas, so I needed some fresh input. What better way  than to start a new custom installation business from scratch. But since starting a CI business in the U.S. has gotten too easy and boring (and the market a bit saturated), we decided to do it in someplace more challenging. It came down to Afghanistan,  Antarctica, or Turkey. Airfares were cheaper to Turkey. So after a year of hard work, the Europe/Middle East office of Training Reels/Training Dept. Seminars is now open for business, AND we're the proud owners of Cinema@Home in Ankara, Turkey (the capital). We even have a backlog of home theatre/custom installation work. This should definitely generate a lot more TIPS!

New 3D home theater projectors introduced at CES 2011, plus 2D to 3D conversion

Last week at the Consumer Electronics Show in Vegas, we saw a wide range of 3D HD projectors that accept content over HDMI. This is a game changer. Until now, most of the 3D projectors on the market could only receive content from a PC through a VGA or DVI cable, reducing the image quality to a lousy 480i.

Project Showcase: ISI Automation

ISI Automation, through the backup of McIntosh, Meridian, Screen Research, Control4, Kaleidescape, Vudu, and Digital Projection International, has finished the first "Million Dollar Entertainment Man's Cave."

Rethinking The Last Analog Mile:

So, here's the $64,000 question:  With all the trends in content and technology already headed for a full-digital future, why is it that most multi-room home a/v systems still use analog to distribute audio and video content?  Even more ludicrous, all of these systems are starting with content that's in digital format and converting it to analog in order to route it around the home.

SageTV Media Center 7 - A Better Media Streaming Solution?

I believe that SageTV has created a very viable solution for the Home Technology enthusiasts' home by integrating their media streaming server (the SageTV HD Theater 300 ) with quality client software ( SageTV Client and Placeshifter ).  With the addition of the Windows Home Server add-in ( SageTV Media Server ), they have empowered the Home Technology buffs out there with both power AND flexibility to design a whole-house (even whole-world!) streaming media system that takes their home system integration project to the next level!

Soundproofing Your Home Theater - Part One

Don't confuse soundproofing with sound absorption. Sound absorption uses carpet, heavy draperies, closed-cell foam or similar material within a room to curb or absorb reflections, essentially to stop excessive echoes and reverberation. However these materials will do little to prevent the transmission of lower-frequency bass and vibration through the walls and studs and midrange sounds through air leaks to other rooms.

Soundproofing Your Home Theater - Part Two

Part One on home theater soundproofing received an excellent response, including rather vociferous discussion on other sites (and in emails to me), encouraging the use of a substance called "Green Glue" in place of silicone caulk. Further research indicates there is a range of various soundproofing caulks and glues available from a variety of vendors at widely varying prices. To sum up, it's the sealing properties and elasto-viscous nature of these materials that all help, but do-it-yourselfers should be cautious about some extravagant claims made for some of these materials

Surviving Your First, Your Worst Media Interview

Most journalists - online, on air, print -- don't ask tricky, tough questions.  They simply ask a question and let the interviewee fill in the awkward silence. Or as Bob Woodward (Robert Redford) said in All the President's Men , "I never asked about Watergate. I simply asked what were Hunt's duties at the White House.

The Connected TV and Video Experience:

While the electronic program guide (EPG) helps by organizing available content and relevant metadata for review, systems with enhanced search functionality and content recommendations allow consumers greater control over the discovery and evaluation process and thus play a significant role in promoting content and maintaining customer satisfaction. While these search-and-recommendation methods differ among solution providers, each system relies on a combination of information sources.
