SMART HOMES GET SMARTER, TECH COMPANIES MORE COMPETITIVE

Builder Online: Home automation is on the rise as smart-home technology becomes more affordable, and tech companies are growing more competitive, the Los Angeles Times reports. Demographics are shifting, and companies like Apple, Amazon, and new startups are in the race for market dominance.

Analytics startup VoiceLabs found that 6.5 million voice-compatible devices were purchased in 2016. The company predicts that 24.5 million devices will be shipped this year alone.

Some tech companies, such as Apple and Amazon, have partnered with home builders to bring smart-home technology to entire developments. Others are developing new virtual assistants as an alternative to Alexa and Siri.

Josh.ai is a start-up introducing a virtual assistant named Josh. Co-founder Alex Capecelatro said:

Five years from now, you won’t be able to buy anything that’s not connected, and that’s a huge business opportunity for many different industries. There’s a new school of developers that are changing the game. In the next few years, some will become giants, and some will be gone.  Full Article:
