Sound Isolation For High -End Home Theaters (2.5 Hrs)
Dr. Brandon Tinianov - Vice President Engineering, Quiet Solution

Today's home theaters benefit from excellent electronic components delivering cutting edge video and sound reproduction. Their ongoing cycles of product improvements have undoubtedly improved the home theater experience for all over the last decade. However, one critical home theater component that has not generally enjoyed the same attention and innovation is that of theater sound isolation. This is unfortunate, because a well -isolated theater is essential to maximizing the dynamic range of the electronics and optimizing the envelopment of the entire sound system. This discussion focuses on the current state -of -the -art in the design and material selection associated with home theater isolation in both scientific and subjective terms. The measurement of sound isolation from sound transmission class (STC) to noise criteria (NC) will be reviewed and discussed. These metrics will be compared as they apply to human response, THX certification and the design preferences of the world's leading designers. The presentation will also review the latest techniques to achieve high sound isolation including the use of clips, hangers, boutique underlayers, and internally damped drywall. Design issues concerned with site selection and existing construction will be discussed and solved.
