CABA's Connected Consumer Roadmap Study

The Continental Automated Buildings Association, through its Connected Home Council and Research Program, has begun to undertake a new, collaborative Connected Consumer Roadmap study.

CABA is a not-for-profit industry association dedicated to the advancement of intelligent home and intelligent building technologies. The organization is supported by an international membership of over 300 organizations involved in the design, manufacture, installation and retailing of products relating to home automation and building automation. Public organizations, including utilities and government, are also members.

CABA's mandate includes providing its members with networking and market research opportunities. CABA also encourages the development of industry standards and protocols, and leads cross-industry initiatives.

Please describe CABA’s Research Program and its benefits.

The CABA Research Program offers a range of opt-in technical and advisory research services designed to provide industry stakeholders with collaborative market research and R&D opportunities. 

The program is designed to be flexible and to maximize relevant and actionable results for all research participants while concurrently sharing and minimizing costs.  It leverages agnostic, systematic and proven project management techniques to ensure that realistic and neutral research results are achieved.

Please describe CABA's new Connected Consumer Roadmap and IoT study.

CABA's new study intends to examine the broad ecosystem which includes consumer connectivity beyond the home. This unique roadmap research will use an "Internet of Things" perspective; taking into account a consumer focused view, from both inside and outside of the home that includes health and wellness, entertainment, mobility, transportation, and security.

IoT refers to physical objects that are seamlessly integrated into an information network, and that actively participate in our daily lives. New consumer demand for a connected lifestyle, along with the increased speed and accessibility of the Internet, has led to an exponential growth of connected devices. The consumer’s ecosystem for connected devices expands far beyond smart phones and cars and includes: tablets, large/small appliances, health and wellness devices, safety/security devices, thermostats/HVAC devices, energy management, and entertainment platforms.

How was the study's topic matter selected?

The connected home market is a fast evolving segment that is being influenced by a number of emerging industry trends and pressing “hot button” issues. At a recent CABA Intelligent Buildings & Digital Home Forum held at The Franklin Institute in Philadelphia, PA on November 19, 2013, attendees participated in a research ideation session to generate topics and select the next Connected Home Council (CHC) Landmark research project for 2014. Several excellent ideas were generated; the top two selections were voted on by the CHC; and the Connected Consumer Roadmap was selected.

What questions will the study attempt to answer?

The study will focus on answering the following questions:

  • What ecosystem (e.g., health and wellness), and cross ecosystem (e.g., entertainment and social) solutions resonate with consumers the most?
  • Which ecosystems are more important to focus on initially and how do they rank in a hierarchy of consumer needs?
  • How important are cloud-based or device-resident “analytics” in providing these solutions?
  • How can we leverage new connections with consumers over the lifetime of a product or service, and create revenue opportunities?
  • How important is personalization in the solutions provided to consumers?
  • How do the solutions and applications morph when considered at home, work, car, or away?
  • What are the preferred devices to interact with around specific opportunities and solutions? 
  • How important are real-time solutions?
  • What cybersecurity issues emerge with the concept hypothesis tested?
  • Do these security issues create a barrier to adoption?
  • What other use factors create barriers to adoption?

How many sponsor organizations are involved in the study?

There are already 12 sponsors for this research: Alarm.com, Hydro One Networks, Hydro-Québec, Intermatic, Inc., Microsoft Corporation, Pella Corporation, Qualcomm Incorporated, Schneider Electric, SecurTek Monitoring Solutions, TELUS, Arrayent Inc. and UPnP Forum.

Who will be conducting this study?

IHS will be conducting this study on behalf of CABA.  IHS is a global information company with world-class experts in the pivotal areas shaping today’s business landscape: energy, economics, geopolitical risk, sustainability and supply chain management.  IHS will use a two-phase research approach, including both an extensive consumer survey and in-depth industry interviews to author a comprehensive report on the connected home landscape.
