The life of an electronic device is directly related to its operating temperature. Each 10 C (18 F) temperature rise reduces component life by 50%*. The Home automation market is well served with standard control equipment for standard systems. But what if your requirement is not standard or you need additional functionality. Often it is a case of adding timers, relays and assorted components which can lead to a system which is unreliable and difficult to service.
Wireless communication is expected to be a key technology for the home automation market, as the use of RF-signals is highly desirable or necessary due to the ability to penetrate walls and ceilings. Connectivity can enable people to check on the status of their appliances from remote locations. An example is wireless air quality monitoring, which will be developed further below.
I have to say that the AtlasIT has saved me a lot of time already! My second lot of Clipsal RJ45 sockets used a different colour code to the first lot meaning they didn't work when I installed them! A few minutes with the AtlasIT showed me that the orange and green pairs were swapped. On another occasion I was connecting my TiVo to the phone line using one of the CAT5 cables at the back of my AV system. I couldn't figure out what was wrong, but a couple of minutes with the Atlas and I realised I had patched the phone line in to the wrong port on the patch panel.
"System Integration" speaks to the need for intelligent cooperation between the electronic systems in your home. It could be a matter as small as controlling different lighting zones by time or circumstance, or it may go so far as interfacing audio/video, security, lighting, heating & a/c, sprinkler systems, & oh-gosh-so-many -other-things. Remember the key idea: Integration of systems.
So ... we're off on a new journey into the future of technology with a new tool to help us mark the way. I don't think everyone needs a Pocket PC ... but if you work or play in a busy information packed world then you will probably use one in the future. I like the iPAQ because it's functionality is totally familiar to me (as a windows user) and the learning curve was short. The unit is well made and easy to use ... that's all it takes to convince an old dog to try some new tricks :-)

Caveats and concerns aside, the next two years promise to bring significant development in the field of connected entertainment. Growth will come from partnerships between platform developers and service providers (think set-top boxes), new forms of content, emerging business models, and a growing awareness and acceptance among consumers for these applications.
It's amazing how they can get voice recognition into such a small package. For the ultimate couch potato ... this is the greatest tool around. You don't even have to lift your head from the pillow to surf the channels :-)
Once configured, the AWM2 works like a charm. Toggling the switch switches the relay instantly, and the X10 message that accompanies it is sent immediately. Toggling the second switch also sends the appropriate X10 message out. If you're installing the AWM2 in a ceiling, chances are that you're not going to be using the second switch input. If this is the case, make sure it's well insulated and taped up out of the way - it doesn't take much to trigger it.
The programmable logic controller (PLC) allowed for the integration of three basic electrical systems: lighting, drapery and audio. It also allowed for all of the systems to be controlled from one common wall station, thus eliminating the conventional switch wall clutter.
If you're a consumer living in a small town or in rural America, get ready for a big surprise. If you live in rural Wisconsin, the Dakotas, Georgia, South Carolina, upstate New York, Alaska, Texas, Nevada, or pretty much any other rural state, your phone company is about to provide a range of services that no other provider will be able to, if it isn't already. If you live in the big city, eat your heart out!
