To recap ... we are building a Demonstration Lab and Home Theater Showroom in an existing building to learn and pass on some of the experiences to those of you who want to enhance your lifestyle by networking your home entertainment, control, data and communication systems. I have been using Phillips TiVo for a few months now and I have to admit that when I first heard about it I thought it was just another gadget to show off to your friends. LED's (one line for sun one for wind) on the right keypad indicate the intensity as signaled from the sensors. Both setpoints are adjustable on the keypad. When the sun intensity is above setpoint for a preset length of time ... the awning comes down (to the physical limit as set on the motor). When the sun intensity drops below the setpoint or the wind velocity rises above it's setpoint ... then the awning goes up.
Smart products and applications help the help desk help you. Even in the cases in which a smart product can't fix or reconfigure itself (and you have to call for help), the product automatically sends to the help desk a detailed description of the problem, the automatic fixes that have already been tried, and a description of the network configuration in which the product is operating.
In the end, the infrastructure that a service provider creates to reach the shell of a home will be the catalyst for manufacturers, service companies and others to create the automated products that may one day make the home automation market what we always thought it could be.

Ten years ago it might be possible to worry about the sound and picture quality at the end of a video balun connection. But today, these concerns are diminishing as the design quality of the video baluns and twisted pair cable keeps improving. In many instances, one would be hard-pressed to tell the difference between an audio-video signal transmitted via coax cable versus the same signal sent via twisted pair and video baluns.
The two protocols are not compatible with each other, they operate in different frequency ranges 2.4 GHz (802.11b) and 5 (802.11a) GHz. The speed rate that they transfer data are different; 802.11a up to 54Mbps compared to 802.11b 11Mbps (theoretical speeds). Finally though 802.11b came first, 802.11a is the new standard which most people are adopting because of the higher transfer rates.
xAP is an open protocol intended to support the integration of telemetry and control devices primarily within the home - it is the glue that supports the interconnectivity of Home Automation devices.
One advantage this newer standard has over 802.11b systems is that it runs on the 5GHz frequency band where it will not get any interference from 2.4 GHz devices such as cordless phones etc. Also, by adding 128 bit RC4 and 152 bit RC4 data encryption there should be no need to worry about data security.
