The Mark of Excellence Call for Entries is right around the corner and who better to give advice to integrators and manufacturers than one of our long time and accomplished winners, Shawn Smith of S&S Electric Co. Inc. Shawn has been a member of CEA since 2002 and his company has been the winner of several Mark of Excellence Awards. In this exclusive interview, Shawn gives some of his advice on how to submit a great entry and the importance of the Mark of Excellence Awards for home technology installers and manufacturers. You can be sure that when the call for entries opens on October 1, S&S Electric will be submitting yet another competitive entry.
Most people think that Star Wars (1977) was the first movie shown in movie theaters using surround sound technology. It wasn't. Although Star Wars ushered in the new era of surround sound (despite being named Dolby Stereo), it was Walt Disney that utilized Bell Lab's Fantasound technology in the movie Fantasia (1941).
As the LG Techorator, I know how important it is for your technology to integrate seamlessly into the home and with your lifestyle. With a few easy "techorating" tips, you can make sure your new technology works with the look and feel of your home, rather than overwhelming the space.

Standards can be a good thing; the GSM standard proved to be a great thing. Yet standards must be useful and not established simply for the sake of having a "standard." A European mobile TV standard will not enable lucrative roaming services, nor will it solve the economies-of-scale problem facing the market. It will, however, deny European operators the freedom to choose which technologies they need and also deny them the use of established network infrastructure.
Radio-controlled systems allow wireless remote control of existing residential lighting. The communication link between the PLC and the radio-controlled system is an RS232 interface unit. The connection is via a standard DB-9 serial cable between the PLC and the RS232 interface unit. Both devices should be mounted close together as per the RS232 minimum power requirements.
This is based on a tip I got from someone at the CEDIA EXPO show. Each year, BES Manufacturing does a retrofit contest in their booth. The contest consists of fishing a cable between two (of several) locations in a wood frame "set" in the booth. The best time of the day wins a prize. One of the fishing tasks requires feeding a ballchain down a wall cavity and retrieving it from a hole in the bottom of the cavity on the opposite side.
Nexus 21 exhibited their innovative TV Lift products at the CEDIA Expo. They are a popular choice among AV Pros because they are compact, near-silent, and very affordable. New products this year are TV Lifts that swivel and a clever new shelf system.
