From Jennifer Langston at University of Washington's UWToday: A team of University of Washington computer scientists and electrical engineers has demonstrated that it’s possible to generate Wi-Fi transmissions using 10,000 times less power than conventional methods. The new Passive Wi-Fi system also consumes 1,000 times less power than existing energy-efficient wireless communication platforms, such as Bluetooth Low Energy and Zigbee. A paper describing those results will be presented in March at the 13th USENIX Symposium on Networked Systems Design and Implementation. The technology has also been named one of the 10 breakthrough technologies of 2016 by MIT Technology Review... (full article) (paper) (hackernews technical discussion)
Inspired by the IP industry where engineers have a huge resource of off-shelve tools and materials that they can call on to inspire new designs and easily create software to make things work, the Ethernet testing industry is quickly adopting an approach where testers are specifically designed to certify Ethernet.
Stacey Higginbotham for Fortune: Routers, those typically ugly-looking devices that provide Wi-Fi, have long been a weak link in home network security. Hackers can take advantage easy-to-guess passwords and lax manufacturing standards by an industry that has long focused on price over security, asdetailed Tuesday in the Wall Street Journal. Homeowners, for their part, haven’t exactly focused on network security either. Many have no idea what routers do and instead rely on their Internet service provider to include them in their modems. When ISPs started charging monthly rental fees of $4 to $7 for modems, some consumers started buying their own home networking gear. But most people still shop based on price. Even those looking for high-end features don’t have much to choose from. Most routers come with only a limited number of extras. That is changing though. Cont'd...
Educate yourself on how Wi-Fi works, make sure your site surveys are thorough, use tools and testing to help you design, and ask your vendor for help. Do all of these things, and you'll be much more likely to install great Wi-Fi networks for satisfied, happy customers.
PoE+ devices can ask for power in much smaller increments and can change their power needs at any time, depending on what the device is doing, such as "sleeping"-a power saving mode.
Your customers need stable, secure and useable Wi-Fi, and they need it in increasingly larger spaces and under more challenging conditions. Determining the best wireless solutions will require a little homework on top of considering customer requirements and budgets.
