Cogency Semiconductor and ViXS Demonstrate First Full-Motion Rate-Adaptive Video over HomePlug Home Network

Industry Leaders Collaborate on Broadcast Quality Video-over-Powerline using HomePlug Powerline Technology for Set-Top Box, Media Center, and CE OEM's

TORONTO, Ontario, January 6, 2003 - Cogency Semiconductor Inc., a leading provider of high-performance semiconductors for the home networking and entertainment markets, and ViXS Systems Inc., the Video Networking Company and leading developer of video-over-IP networking solutions, today announced they will demonstrate the ability to provide broadcast quality video over industry-standard HomePlug® powerline networks at a private reception for customers, media and analysts during the International Consumer Electronics Show (CES) 2003 in Las Vegas.

Cogency is bringing the best in HomePlug networking silicon and combining that with ViXS' video networking processor to provide reliable, broadcast quality video over existing residential electrical wiring. The demonstration - using Cogency's HomePlug Module and HomePlug-ready power supply, incorporating its PiranhaT chipset, and ViXS' XCode network management software - can provide up to eight or more simultaneous video broadcast streams through a set-top box, personal video recorder (PVR), personal computer (PC) or central gateway to any display device in the home.

The complementary ViXS XCode IC and network management software adjusts bit-rates, resolutions and formats of multiple MPEG video streams, in real time, adapting each stream to changing network bandwidth. The XCode manages video home networking environments - the first technology that guarantees 30 frames per second (FPS) of robust, high quality video over any type of Internet Protocol (IP) network.

"Cogency is the industry leader in powerline home networking, and together with our expertise in video-over-IP, we are able to offer the industry's most robust video-over-powerline distribution system for the home environment," said Sally Daub, President and CEO of ViXS Systems. "This is absolutely the first public demonstration that proves the availability of a complete standards-based, video-over-powerline solution.

"We believe the ViXS XCode technology to be an ideal companion for powerline networking," stated Ron Glibbery, CEO and President, Cogency Semiconductor. "The inherent reliability of the HomePlug technology, coupled with XCode's ability to dynamically manage available bandwidth, provides a powerful technology combination for quality, in-home video distribution.
