Home systems control is moving into the business of power monitoring and control in efforts to realize and reduce energy consumption for sustainability. Now add to that carbon footprint product ratings and now you see the rest of the picture.

Smart energy initiatives were first attempted in the early 90’s to track and thereby purchase energy as computed locally at the facility on a minute-by-minute basis for buying power at the lowest rate periods. This effort was pretty much abandoned due to governmental and industry reluctance as energy supplies and prices returned to near normal.

As the cost of energy surges, energy monitoring and control are on the verge of returning with a vengeance and believe the efforts will stick this time because of governmental intervention, green awareness and the consumers desire to lower energy operating costs.

In keeping with this philosophy, another view of energy conservation and green awareness is pushing the envelope even further by now looking at the quantity and integrated value of the physical products themselves. This is beyond the current carbon footprint rating of any particular product and moving into functional use whereby determining its carbon value on reducing functional redundancy or need for similar products. Another words, why would you need 10 remotes controls you can use one to perform all those functions.

BlueKey Wireless Systems foresaw this issue coming and decided to develop products that would positively impact product redundancy issues in the home control product sector.

The BlueKey® technology changes the current paradigm of a limited centralized use of remote controls into a common transportable device enabling a Standardized format for ALL remote controllable products. The user for the first time will have the ability to control and operate devices in your primary home, secondary home, multiple vehicles, traffic gates, security access at the office and other daily controlling scenarios. The cell phone is quickly becoming the device of choice for all telecommunications, A/V playback, soon monetary transactions and now remote control.

The BlueKey technology addresses this hardware redundancy issue inherently by allowing the user to operate most or all devices by the use of a single a cell phone for total control. That can equal a savings of hundreds of thousands of products that are no longer required to perform the same functions while improving the user experience and convenience This Co2 emission reduction can be realized from the elimination of the multiplicity of handheld controller hardware needed to operate most of the typical products used in personal and business lifestyles.

It is estimated that in a single day a person will use an average of 10 remote controls for everything from the A/V equipment, garage door, lights, vehicle, traffic gates, security access and the list goes on.

Each remote control consumes valuable resources for manufacturing and transportation. Then requires batteries, which are manufactured and hopefully disposed of properly for recycling.

To demonstrate this Co2 reduction I used the Product Lifecycle Calculator from idc™ http://lcacalculator.com/productlifecycle.html#

In calculating the carbon footprint and Co2 emissions the following processes need to be calculated and considered.

Extraction – The extraction of raw materials for manufacturing.

Manufacturing - The process of turning raw materials into finished goods requires energy and causes emissions.

Transport - Transportation of product from the factory to the customer requires energy and produces emissions.

Use, Electrical products consume energy over their lifetime.

Disposal - Disposing of products also consumes energy, Recycling consumes more energy than recycling but offers the potential of reduced energy input when used for new products.

After calculating the Co2 emissions of a typical handheld remote control I found the Co2 emissions for a typical handheld remote control over five years is about 40.11kg. If you use 10 remote controls in your household, that can be over 400kg of emissions that could be eliminated. It was also calculated the average cell phone outputs about 60kg due to shorter lifecycle and increased energy consumption. The net result is that using the BlueKey technology in lieu of using separate remote controls would have a net Co2 output reduction of around 340kg, and that’s how technology innovation makes contributes to the greening process.

I believe we will see this carbon redundancy value gain in popularity as electronic products fit more functionality into designs and as green lifestyles become more the norm. As Consumers are financially squeezed the more green living and purchase reduction will make sense.

BlueKey licenses their technology to manufacturers worldwide vertical markets such as; Security, Automotive, Access control, A/V Appliances, Door/Gate operators, Home/Commercial controls, Monitoring, Medical, and Instrumentation.

BlueKey Wireless Systems Inc. is located in Fl. Lauderdale Florida and the leading developer of Bluetooth remote control technologies, which enable Bluetooth devices to perform universal remote control functions. The company has filed multiple Patents for their technologies.
