Facebook Messenger, iMessage, and Snapchat are top three messaging apps

SoLoMo app usage in other categories, such as food delivery services, is disrupting traditional services

Dallas, Texas, November 15, 2016 - Parks Associates announced new research today showing Facebook Messenger is by far the most popular messaging app, used by 73% of U.S. smartphone owners who use at least one messaging app. 360 View Update: Mobile First: SoLoMo (Social, Location, and Mobile) App Usage Trends reveals that after Facebook Messenger, iMessage is a distant second at 32% and Snapchat ranks at 28% among smartphone messaging app users.

Snapchat has the highest percentage of users in the under-35 age group, followed by WhatsApp and Facebook Messenger. Nearly 75% of Snapchat users are under 35, compared to 58% of WhatsApp users and 47% of Facebook Messenger users. While WhatsApp users are mostly male, nearly 60% of Facebook Messenger and Snapchat users are female.

Mobile First: SoLoMo App Usage Trends, now available for purchase, provides an overview of the SoLoMo app market by nine categories, including messaging, social, payment, ride sharing, room sharing, food delivery, second-hand item sales, home services, and family care. It examines consumer usage and awareness of specific SoLoMo apps and analyzes the impact of these apps on traditional services.

Although many SoLoMo apps are in their early phases of adoption, Uber, used by 21% of U.S. smartphone owners, is creating awareness of SoLoMo apps in general.

"About 50-70% of smartphone owners who are aware of a SoLoMo app use it," said Chris Tweedt, Research Analyst, Parks Associates. "Other factors affecting adoption of SoLoMo apps include consumer familiarity, geographical availability, and incumbent players' mobile presence."

According to Mobile First: SoLoMo App Usage Trends, Grubhub leads in the food delivery app category, and OfferUp is ahead in a fragmented second-hand reselling app market. More importantly, 20% of SoLoMo app users strongly agree that they rarely use traditional services now that they use SoLoMo apps. These users are generally more satisfied and find these apps save money and make their life easier.

"SoLoMo apps can disrupt traditional services if incumbents have yet to develop their mobile strategies," Tweedt said. "Young, urban, high-income, educated users are early targets of these apps and could influence other consumer groups' awareness, perception, and interest in these apps. Their increased use could further weaken traditional services' market position."
