SANTA CLARA, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Internet of Things World, the world's largest and most comprehensive IoT event, opened today in Santa Clara, California. The event highlights transformational IoT topics and industries, including smart homes and cities, connected healthcare, wearable devices, autonomous cars, and intelligent energy. Over 10,000 people and 200 exhibitors are expected to attend the event over three days, which for the first time combines Internet of Things World, Future Connected Cars, Wearable World Congress, and Apps World North America. The event will run May 10-12. Executives from BMW, GE, Lyft, Amazon, John Deere, and Microsoft will be presenting on a variety of panels. A complete list can be found at https://iotworldevent.com/2016-speakers/.
Lyft will be participating on the panel "Embracing Shared Mobility and the Cultural Implications to Create Smarter Cities" with executives from Uber, Zipcar and the San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency.
"Smart cities require even smarter transportation," said Annabel R. Chang, Director of Public Policy for Lyft. "Whether people are traveling for business or leisure, transportation is a cornerstone of any city's economic health. We can't rely on minor improvements to the existing infrastructure to meet the needs of growing populations. Lyft is already laying the groundwork for tomorrow's drivers and passengers by developing rideshare systems for autonomous cars and on-demand networks. I'm looking forward to a lively discussion about how private and public transportation organizations can work together to drive economic growth and greater shared mobility."
Current, powered by GE will sponsor the ‘IoT for Cities Hackathon' being held at the event on May 11 and 12. Over 200 pre-qualified developers, data scientists and urban experts will present app and product ideas that solve the problems affecting today's and tomorrow's cities to a panel of experts and civic leaders from around the world. They will address traffic, parking, building, public safety, economic development and public health challenges.
The grand prize winner will receive $10,000 cash. Additional prizes include a spot in Wearable IoT World Labs, Glyph Mediawear, and a $2,500 fully paid scholarship to attend the Coding House School. For more information on the Hackathon, visit http://www.wwcongress.com/iot-for-cities-hackathon/.
"The next era of Intelligent Cities starts by digitizing the physical city and empowering individuals, innovators, and entrepreneurs to change the way they live, work and play using data," says John Gordon, Chief Digital Officer, Current, powered by GE. "We're looking forward to partnering with the developer community to leverage insights from intelligent infrastructure to propel economic growth and bring to life new ideas that unleash a whole new world of potential."
