Vivint Element Thermostat Wins 2016 Red Dot Award for Product Design

New smart thermostat wins prestigious international design competition

PROVO, Utah--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Vivint Smart Home, a leading provider of smart home technology, today announced that its Vivint Element™ thermostat was awarded the Red Dot, the international distinction for high design quality. The international Red Dot jury chose winners from a pool of 5,200 products and innovations from 57 nations.

The Vivint Element™ thermostat provides a new level of intelligence for temperature control and energy savings by integrating with all the door, window and motion sensors in a Vivint smart home. Because it is integrated into the Vivint Sky smart home platform, Vivint Element can determine when you are home, away, asleep or on vacation, and then optimize the temperature to make sure you are both comfortable and conserving energy.

"We designed Vivint Element to complement the Vivint smart home system and help families stay comfortable, better manage their energy usage, and save money," said Stephen Boynton, senior industrial designer at Vivint Smart Home. "The interface is optimized for quick interactions with homeowners and their guests. It then dissolves into a soft white face that feels more like home than technology. A minimal design approach and respect for a variety of home interiors allows Vivint Element to blend well with any style."

The Red Dot Product Design jury consists of 41 experts from all around the world including freelance designers, design professors and journalists. The independent expert panel assesses each entry strictly and fairly, according to criteria such as degree of innovation, formal quality, functionality and ecological compatibility.

"With their performances, the Red Dot winners not only demonstrated an extraordinary design quality, but they also showed that design is an integral part of innovative product solutions," said Dr. Peter Zec, founder and president of the Red Dot Award.

The Red Dot: Best of the Best laureates will accept trophies in front of 1,200 guests during a ceremony on July 4, 2016. All award-winning products will be presented in the special exhibition "Design on Stage" for four weeks, before becoming part of the permanent exhibition.

About the Red Dot Design Award

In order to appraise the wide scope of design in a professional manner, the Red Dot Design Award is broken down into the three distinct disciplines: the Red Dot Award: Product Design, Red Dot Award: Communication Design and Red Dot Award: Design Concept. The Red Dot Award is organised by the Design Zentrum Nordrhein Westfalen in Essen, Germany. With more than 17,000 entries in 2015 alone, it is one of the largest competitions in the world. It was in 1955 that a jury convened for the first time to assess the best designs of the day. The name and brand of the award were developed in the 1990s by Red Dot CEO, Professor Dr. Peter Zec. Since then the sought-after "Red Dot" is the revered international seal of outstanding design quality. Further information:
