CEDIA - Yale Announces Linus: a New Kind of Lock, Reinvented for the Nest Home

New lock provides access to the Nest home from anywhere, anytime.

NEW HAVEN, CONN, October 6, 2015 - Yale Locks & Hardware today announced a new lock developed through the Works with Nest program that works seamlessly with Nest products and is fully integrated with the Nest home. Named after the company's founder, Linus Yale, the Linus lock combines Nest's thoughtful approach to the connected home and Yale's deep knowledge and experience in lock security.

Linus is a key free touchscreen lock that provides homeowners with extraordinary control and convenience. Lock and unlock doors from anywhere, create passcodes that provide different levels of access for family members and guests, and revoke access at any time - all from the Nest app. Homeowners can also receive alerts based on guest passcodes, set Linus to automatically lock after a specified number of seconds, and see a history of who has come and gone and when. And Linus is the only residential door lock that allows a homeowner to remotely check to see if the door is open or closed in addition to whether it's locked or unlocked.

In a home with Nest Protect, if Protect detects smoke or carbon monoxide, Linus issues a voice alert and a visual alert on its touchscreen to warn customers of danger before they enter the house. Linus can also inform the Nest Learning Thermostat to switch to Home or Away based on when the homeowner enters or leaves the house. In addition, Linus can turn Nest Cam off when people are home and on when they leave.

"Yale is thrilled to work with a company as innovative and forward-thinking as Nest on the development of Linus, a product that sets a new standard in security, convenience and versatility, in a design that's both beautiful and stunningly simple," said Jason Williams, general manager, Yale Locks & Hardware. "Yale is proud to be part of the Nest home."

Linus, named after Yale founder Linus Yale, who invented the original cylinder pin-tumbler lock in 1843, was created with the Nest home in mind. It features a sleek, contemporary and low-profile design, with a clean, simple and intuitive user interface, and is easy to install, requiring just a screwdriver in most cases. Set up is made simple by the use of easy-to-follow voice prompts.

Hardware and software security are state-of-the-art. Reinforced hardware on the outside protects the lock from physical assault, and the lack of a keyhole means that there's no cylinder to pick or bump. Remote access is secured using multiple layers of bank-level encryption technology in combination with Nest's proprietary Nest Weave technology.

Should power fail, Wi-Fi go down or the phone is unavailable or dead, Linus can be opened using the touchscreen. And Nest Weave technology allows Linus to communicate with other Nest products even if the Internet connection is lost. Should the lock batteries drain, the deadbolt can be powered by simply touching a nine-volt battery to the terminals at the bottom of the lock.

Linus will be available in 2016.
