CEA Applauds Introduction of Bipartisan Wi-Fi Innovation Act

"Unlicensed spectrum is the fuel that powers innovation."

Arlington, Va., July 17, 2014 - The following statement can be attributed to Veronica O'Connell, vice president of government and political affairs at the Consumer Electronics Association (CEA)®, regarding the introduction of the bipartisan Wi-Fi Innovation Act:


"We thank House Oversight and Government Reform Committee Chairman Darrell Issa (R-Calif.), House Energy and Commerce Communications and Technology Subcommittee Ranking Member Anna G. Eshoo (D-Calif.), Communications and Technology Subcommittee Vice Chairman Bob Latta (R-Ohio) and Congresswoman Doris Matsui (D-Calif.) for introducing the Wi-Fi Innovation Act.

"Unlicensed spectrum is the fuel that powers innovation. The fact that these members of Congress reached across party lines and committee assignments is a clear recognition of our nation's growing demand for unlicensed spectrum and the vital role it plays in our economy. The latest CEA research shows unlicensed spectrum generates $62 billion a year for the U.S. economy and creates jobs nationwide. And the consumer electronics that rely most heavily on unlicensed spectrum are currently enjoying a cumulative annual growth rate of about 30 percent.

"By directing the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) to conduct spectrum-sharing tests within the 5 GHz band, the Wi-Fi Innovation Act will help improve our nation's spectrum efficiency - a critical need, as more and more consumers now demand 'anytime/anywhere' connectivity. The bill also recognizes that unlicensed spectrum is critical to vehicle safety applications and intelligent transportation initiatives, proof that the sponsors understand we must have enough unlicensed spectrum available to fuel our increasingly interconnected world. We continue to work with the FCC, as it prepares for auctions which will also provide much-needed spectrum.

"We look forward to working with the sponsors to pass the Wi-Fi Innovation Act, as well as the companion legislation introduced by Senators Rubio (R-Fla.) and Booker (D-NJ)."

CEA recently released the report, Unlicensed Spectrum and the American Economy, which gauges the economic impact of devices that use unlicensed spectrum.
