GEBERIT MONOLITH WALL-MOUNT SYSTEM FLEXIBILITY HELPS DESIGNER BRING VISION TO LIFE IN NYC BATHROOM RENOVATION

Monolith conceals the toilet tank, fill valve, and flush valve inside a simple, yet beautiful housing that attaches to the wall.

Des Plaines, IL: Geberit's Monolith wall-mount toilet system helped Virtus Design update the bathroom in a 1970s Upper West Side co-op apartment according to their design vision.

Even though New York City apartments don't have a lot of closet space, the closet in the bedroom was used to expand the very small bathroom right behind it. "Capturing this added space allowed our design just the perfect niche for the toilet," explains Frederick Wildfoerster, owner and principal designer at Virtus Design. "Our design capitalized on the Geberit space-saving, in-wall toilet tank with a wall-mount toilet. I use in-wall tanks as much as possible."

There was one major hitch with the in-wall design, however: This particular building in New York would not allow the use of the in-wall system. Yet the space was too tight to fit a full-size toilet.

While explaining the dilemma to their plumbing supplier, Virtus was enlightened with the supplier's recent find at the 2012 Kitchen and Bath Industry Show in Chicago: Geberit's new Monolith tank for wall-mount toilets. Monolith conceals the toilet tank, fill valve, and flush valve inside a simple, yet beautiful housing that attaches to the wall. It is a slim, attractive alternative to a typical toilet tank. Just like the Geberit in-wall system, Monolith creates additional usable space in small bathrooms and offers plenty of scope for creativity.

"I was very limited to what I could use. I had planned for an in-wall tank, and Monolith filled all of my requirements and the building's requirements. It seemed perfect, so I ordered it," explains Wildfoerster.

"It's a beautiful look. It looks sculptural and very clean, with different choices in glass. It's a very small footprint; it was just what we needed," he continues. Monolith's modular structure is made of high-quality materials, including highly polished safety glass and sleek brushed metal.

"The white glass on the Monolith blended well with our design concept and polished marble walls," says Wildfoerster. "It is a complementary look, fitting the very clean, very refined design. It fits in beautifully."

The Monolith tank cultivates flexible design with a variety of compatible wall-mount toilets. "The client was thrilled that the Monolith could accommodate their toilet choice because we had to also fit a Duravit SensoWash toilet seat/bidet combination on top of it, and not all toilets accept that," says Wildfoerster.

Also of interest was saving as much water as possible. Featuring the latest water-conserving technology, Monolith uses a dual-flush mechanism that is built into the top of the housing. The system's large and small levers offer two water-saving flush choices: 1.6 GPF (6 LPF) and 0.8 GPF (3 LPF), respectively.
