Ingersoll Rand Provides Home Automation and Connectivity to Teams Participating in the 2013 U.S. Solar Decathlon

Teams from West Virginia and New Mexico among those to use Nexia™ Home Intelligence System


Ingersoll Rand (NYSE:IR), a world leader in creating and sustaining safe, comfortable and efficient environments, is offering home automation technology including the NexiaTM Home Intelligence System to the 20 international teams participating in the U.S. Department of Energy Solar Decathlon 2013, October 3-13, Irvine Park, California. The technology will help the contestants gain more insight into total energy used in their house projects and allow them to make better decisions in achieving maximum efficiency.

Having a simple, easy to use system that controls and monitors the home environment, including temperature and comfort settings, is an important element in effectively managing energy usage. The system allows users to link all of the security features and energy sources in a home and interact and adjust those sources from wherever at their convenience. The smart-home technology is completely wireless and can be managed via smart phones, tablets and computers from any location with internet access.

Student teams competing in the U.S. Department of Energy Solar Decathlon 2013 will leverage new automation technologies from Ingersoll Rand, including the Nexia Home Intelligence System and Trane Energy Management Solution.

Incorporating the Nexia Home Intelligence System into their house designs, allows participants to leverage the latest wireless technology to control locks, lighting, thermostat controls, cameras, blind and window covering controls, energy management solutions, and solar production measurement. The primary controls and locks are manufactured by Schlage and Trane. Nexia serves as an open platform to connected devices to allow complete home control management and remote connectivity.

Ingersoll Rand is also making available its Trane Energy Management Solution (TEMS) to help measure circuit level energy consumption and renewable (solar) production. All data and measurement is displayed in a simple and easy to read user interface. This will provide insight for the teams and help them educate visitors on energy use and costs - an important component of the competition.

Four Teams Become Early Adopters

To date, four teams have committed to using the Nexia Home Intelligence platform in their Solar Decathlon 2013 entry:

1. Arizona State University & The University of New Mexico

2. Team Ontario (Queen's University, Carleton University, and Algonquin College)

3. The University of North Carolina at Charlotte

4. West Virginia University
