A report has been released today from the UK Office for National Statistics (ONS), which reveals that over 19 million homes in the UK now have Internet access.

The 2010 Internet Access Households and Individuals report finds that over 30 million adults are now using the Internet every day, nearly double the usage of 2006.

Mark Williams from the ONS said "since 2006 we have seen a significant increase in the number of people using the Internet, with the number of adults accessing the Internet every day almost doubling to just over 30 million."

Mr Williams also goes on to comment that we are very far away from getting everyone in the UK online as over 9 million people have never actually used this Internet. These individuals were most likely to be people over the age of 65, people on low incomes and people with no formal qualifications.

London was the area with the highest level of home broadband Internet connections, with 83% being online. The North East had the lowest at amount of connections at just 59%.

The report also showed the significant increase in people connecting to the Internet via their mobile phone. This was up 8% in 2009 to 31% during 2010.

Other findings showed that 31 million people had shopped online during the last year and that 17 million people watched online TV or radio such as BBC iPlayer or 4OD.The use of Wi -Fi hotspots continued to rise too with 2.7 million people (7 per cent of Internet users) using wireless hotspots at locations such as cafes, restaurants, and hotels.
