Carriers Can Leverage Copper and Fiber Solutions to Deliver Advanced Services to Unserved and Underserved Areas

HUNTSVILLE, AL, (February 24, 2009) ADTRAN®, Inc. (NASDAQ: ADTN) a leading supplier of next -generation networking solutions, today announced key elements of its Fiber -to -the -Premises (FTTP) strategy, strengthening the company's comprehensive portfolio of access solutions. ADTRAN offers a complete suite of both copper and fiber access solutions, enabling carriers to cost -effectively expand broadband services to unserved and underserved areas targeted by the recently signed American Recovery and Reinvestment Act.

ADTRAN's broadband access strategy has been built on a portfolio of Ethernet -based access solutions that address multiple network architectures, including Fiber -to -the -Node (FTTN), Fiber -to -the -Premises (FTTP), Fiber -to -the -Curb (FTTC), IP DSLAMs, Service Migration and Multiservice Access. These offerings are supported by a common management solution and are accepted by the U.S. Department of Agriculture's Rural Utilities Service (USDA RUS).

As part of ADTRAN's FTTP strategy, research and development efforts have been underway to deliver a wide range of differentiated Optical Network Terminal (ONT) solutions. ADTRAN will be introducing three new families of ONTs to address Residential, Business and Cell Site applications.

Adding to ADTRAN's Total Access 300 Series ONTs are the new Total Access 351 and Total Access 352 Single Family Unit (SFU) ONTs (available in March). These solutions address the residential market with industry -leading voice, data and video capabilities. Future models in this family of ONTs will include support for Radio Frequency (RF) video, Radio Frequency over Glass (RFoG), and Home Phoneline Networking Alliance (HPNA), which enable carriers to leverage existing coaxial cable to ease home installations. This family of ONTs will also include models to address Multi -Dwelling Unit (MDU) applications.
The new ONTs leverage ADTRAN's industry -leading Voice over IP (VoIP) technology, with millions of ports currently deployed. Based on the ADTRAN Operating System (AOS), these devices offer unmatched SIP interoperability with a host of major softswitch vendors, as well as integrated statistics and tools that allow carriers to quickly and easily troubleshoot network configuration issues as well as monitor performance.

"ADTRAN offers a very comprehensive portfolio of FTTx products," said Michael Golob, vice president engineering and technology, Frontier Communications (NYSE: FTR). " We benefit not only from the high data rates of fiber optic transmission, but more importantly, the flexibility offered by a portfolio of Ethernet -based systems that can be easily configured for new customized service offerings."

ADTRAN is an industry leader in the broadband market, with the number two market share in the U.S. for DSL port shipments, according to research firm broadbandtrends.com. The Total Access 1100 Series is the global market leader in innovative sealed Fiber -to -the -Node DSLAMs and is deployed by every major U.S. and many global carriers. The Total Access 5000, which is used for a variety of applications including FTTP, has also enjoyed unprecedented success with deployments in the top eight U.S. service providers and several global carriers. More than 60 carriers have adopted the Total Access 5000's Ethernet architecture to increase bandwidth and offer new, differentiated capabilities to unserved or underserved areas.
