Newest OSTAR Light Source Provides Improved Projection Luminance, Enhanced Features and Longer Lifetimes
San Jose, Calif. (Oct. 26, 2006) - OSRAM Opto Semiconductors Inc., a leader in light -emitting diode (LED) technology, today announced its newest OSTAR® Projection RPTV product specifically designed for rear -projection television (RPTV) applications. To meet the continually increasing demand for brighter, sharper, more vivid displays, RPTV manufacturers are turning to LED technology to improve the performance of HDTV.

OSRAM's underlying proprietary ThinFilm (red color) and ThinGaN (green and blue) technologies are used to ensure high efficiency and outstanding luminance. These ThinFilm OSTAR LEDs are "surface emitters" which produce very high luminance from a small emission area without the need for reflectors. In combination with an appropriate imager, system output of 300 lumens (lm) can be achieved for RPTV systems.
Conventional RPTV systems suffer from short lifetimes due to commonly used discharge lamps. OSTAR's average lifespan is between 20,000 and 50,000 hours, meaning fewer lamp replacements and lower maintenance costs than conventional light sources, making this product perfect for rear -projection televisions where re -lamping is often difficult. Discharge lamps also need up to five minutes to warm up to full brightness.
For RPTV, one red, one blue and one green OSTAR are used; each supplied with a special optic. Typical outputs are 750 lumens for red, 1250 for green and 180 for blue.
OSTAR Projection RPTV is suitable for all RPTV technologies, whether they are based on DMD (Digital Micro Mirror Device), LCoS (Liquid Crystal on Silicon) or LCD (Liquid Crystal Display). An RPTV with a screen diagonal of 56 inches equipped with these LEDs can achieve a luminance of up to 500 cd/mē. This ensures that the picture has good contrast, vibrant colors and razor -sharp definition.
OSTAR Projection RPTV enables manufacturers to produce large -screen RPTVs with outstanding features such as instant on, elimination of the color wheel resulting in higher mechanical reliability and pictures with wider color range, more vivid colors and higher contrast. With their long life, these light sources will last the life of the television, providing a better investment for the consumer.
