Surges are momentary peak voltages, i.e. transient voltages, arising for only some milliseconds. They reach peak values of up to some thousand Volts. These surges are caused by Direct Lightning, Indirect Lightning strokes within a distance of 1.5 km, Switching operations within the power supply system or Electromagnetic impulse energies due to internal switching operations.

Lightning cannot be prevented, however proper use of Surge and Lightning Protection devices can safely divert lightning and surges current away from ourselves, our homes and our businesses.
