Surges - a hot thing!

Approximately 24 out of 100 cases of damage to electronic equipment are caused by surges. Therefore, surges are by far the most frequent cause of damage as shown in a study over 7,300 cases. Anyone who has escaped that event by now, has either been lucky - seen from the statistic point of view - or has made some provisions.

Surges hit the most sensitive equipment first and disturb or destroy it. Any electrical power or communication line as well as data network is vulnerable. Surges are momentary peak voltages, i.e. transient voltages, arising for only some milliseconds. They reach peak values of up to some thousand Volts. These surges are caused by Direct Lightning, Indirect Lightning strokes within a distance of 1.5 km, Switching operations within the power supply system or Electromagnetic impulse energies due to internal switching operations.

Lightning cannot be prevented, however proper use of Surge and Lightning Protection devices can safely divert lightning and surges current away from ourselves, our homes and our businesses.
