TFT LCD shipments increased 20% Q/Q and 79% Y/Y to 61.1 million units on the strength of LCD TV modules in Q3'05 with larger-than-20' TV panels capturing 65% of shipments and 84% of revenues.
AUSTIN, TEXAS, December 13, 2005 - -DisplaySearch, an NPD Group Company and the worldwide leader in display market research and consulting, has released Q3'05 large -area TFT LCD shipment results that can be found in its Quarterly Large -Area TFT LCD Shipment Report. TFT LCD shipments increased 20% Q/Q and 79% Y/Y to 61.1 million units on the strength of LCD TV modules in Q3'05 with larger -than -20" TV panels capturing 65% of shipments and 84% of revenues. DisplaySearch expects revenues and shipment shares of larger LCD TV panels to increase over the next few quarters.
By large -area application,
Notebook PC panel shipments increased 23% Q/Q and 47% Y/Y to 5.68 million units per month in Q3'05. Contrary to expectations, 15.0" 1028 × 768 held on as the most popular size despite the exploding popularity of 15.4" 1280 × 800. Demand for panels smaller than 14" remained flat in Q3'05, accounting for 12% of unit shipments. Overall revenues for wide notebook panels increased 39% Q/Q to $1,079 million.
LCD monitor panel shipments increased 17% Q/Q and 89% Y/Y to 11.1 million units per month in Q3'05. 20" 1680 × 1050 had the largest gain with shipments increasing 53% Q/Q to 468K units in Q3'05. 17" 1280 × 1024 remained the top size and format, accounting for 58% of LCD monitor panel shipments, up 13% Q/Q to 11.2 million units. Wide panel revenues increased 16% Q/Q to $294 million.
LCD TV panel shipments continued to post impressive results by growing 31% Q/Q and 152% Y/Y to 2.6 million units per month in Q3'05. The top five suppliers shipped 94% of all LCD TV panels in Q3'05. 32.0" 1366 × 768 continued its impressive growth with shipments increasing 92% Q/Q to 790K units per month in Q3'05 - -more than double that of 20.0" 640 × 480, the second most popular size in Q3'05.
Revenues for large -area TFT LCD panels increased 29% Q/Q and 51% Y/Y to $12.4 billion in Q3'05 as LCD TV panel revenues were up a dramatic 136% Y/Y. By application, notebook PC panel revenues increased 32% Q/Q and 4% Y/Y to $2.5 billion; LCD monitor panel revenues were up 21% Q/Q and 48% Y/Y to $6.1 billion. Most impressive was LCD TV panel revenues, which grew 48% Q/Q and 136% Y/Y to $3.5 billion in Q3'05.
Overall large -area TFT LCD panel ASPs continued to recuperate by growing 8% Q/Q to $206 in Q3'05, up from $192 in Q2'05. On an application basis, notebook PC panel ASPs posted strong gains of 8% Q/Q to $146. Wide notebook PC panel ASP was $152 compared to $141 for non -wide panels. LCD monitor panel ASPs were up 3% Q/Q to $183, but LCD TV panel ASP increases were the most dramatic with 13% Q/Q to $440, a $50 increase from the previous quarter. DisplaySearch's forecasts for large -area TFT LCD panel ASPs were remarkably accurate as shown in Table 1.
By supplier, Samsung overtook LG.Philips LCD (LPL) to capture the top position in large -area TFT LCD unit shipments in Q3'05 with growths of 23% Q/Q and 70% Y/Y to 4.09 million units per month. LPL was right behind with 4.06 million units per month and took the #2 position. AUO remained in the #3 position with 13.9% share of unit shipments in Q3'05. Market share data for the top five LCD suppliers based on area shipped are shown in Table 2. Samsung led in notebook PCs and LCD monitors, LPL led in LCD TVs, while Sharp led in Others.
On a regional basis, Korea maintained its lead in OEM -based large -area TFT LCD panel shipments with 8.9 million units and 44.6% share in Q3'05; Taiwan followed with 43.0% share and 8.6 million units. Japan's continued to rely heavily on small/medium panels, causing its share to fall to 9.5% with 1.9 million units in Q3'05. China's share, though small, increased from 1.1% to 2.8% with shipments more than tripling to 570K units.
