Avocent Delivers Virtual Media for Remote Management of Branch Office Networks

DSR1031 switch enables increased remote functionality

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. - Aug. 2, 2005 - Avocent® Corporation (NASDAQ: AVCT) today announced a new IT management solution designed specifically for managing widely distributed IT resources in environments where there is little or no IT expertise, such as branch offices. The DSR®1031 8 -port digital KVM over IP switch offers two clear benefits for these environments: administrators can access the site remotely to isolate and diagnose problems, and the problems can either be repaired remotely or the right party can be dispatched on the first call to make the repairs. This solution saves time, money, and even adds a layer of security by keeping non -IT personnel away from troubleshooting or rebooting servers.

Virtual media is another Avocent benefit not readily found in most IT solutions. Remote branch locations often prove difficult to manage since IT staff is normally not located on site. With virtual media, administrators can transfer data housed on a local computer to and from remote branch servers to perform tasks across heterogeneous platforms regardless of the operating system. Such tasks include diagnostic testing, file transfers, and operating system and application patches.

"An internal survey of more than eight hundred customers revealed that an overwhelming majority still physically insert a CD into drives to perform routine maintenance such as patches and upgrades," said John Cooper, CEO of Avocent Corporation. "Our new virtual media feature allows them to maintain branch offices remotely, providing the same experience as if they were right at the rack."

When connected to an optional Avocent SPC intelligent power control device, the DSR1031 switch allows technicians to remotely power devices on and off with ease. An external modem can be attached allowing dial -up access when the network is down.

The DSR1031 switch is managed by the Avocent award winning DSView® 3 management software - the same Avocent software used for managing KVM, serial, power and IPMI in data centers. This centralized access through a single interface means administrators and technicians only need to learn one software product for control of their entire IT infrastructure.
