Swimming pool alarms

A pool alarm can be a good additional safeguard in that it provides an additional layer of protection against child drownings in swimming pools.

The subsurface alarms can also be used in conjunction with solarcovers, whereas the surface alarms cannot.

A remote alarm feature that will sound inside the house is important to have with a pool alarm.

On average each year 350 children under the age of five years drown in swimming pools, withmost deaths occurring in residential settings. Also each year, on average, another 2,600 childrenunder five years of age are treated in hospital emergency rooms for near -drowning incidents inswimming pools. About 79 percent of these incidents occur at a home location. These numbershave remained relatively unchanged over the past several years.

CPSC Test CONCLUSION results showed that the subsurface pool alarms generally performed better. They were more consistent in alarming and less likely to false alarm than the surface alarms. When a test object, intended to simulate the weight of a small child, was pushed into the pool, the subsurface sensors detected it most reliably.

You may also want to add a door or gate alarm that allows you to hear your child before he or she reaches the pool.

But remember, a good alarm is no substitute for parental supervision.
