Existing Power Outlets Connect Devices; Good for Hard-To-Reach Areas

If you don't want to go to the hassle or expense of stringing cable to build a home Ethernet network, or if certain areas of your house are too far away for either a wired or wireless connection, help has arrived in the form of the Actiontec HomePlug Ethernet Adapter Kit and Actiontec HomePlug Wireless Kit from Actiontec Electronics. Both products use standard electrical outlets to send data from the room where your router is located to a computer, IP camera or other network device anywhere in the house without the need to run cables on the floor or through the walls. Setup is as simple as plugging an adapter or access point into a wall socket.

Build or Extend Home Networks over Power Lines
The Actiontec HomePlug Ethernet Adapter Kit is designed for users who want to build a home network from scratch without the mess of installing network cabling, but cannot or do not want to go wireless because of the expense or technical difficulties. It can also be used to extend existing Ethernet -based home networks with rooms or areas that cannot be easily reached by Ethernet cable.

Just plug one of the two Ethernet adapters in the kit into a wall socket in the room where your router is located; plug the second adapter into an electrical outlet in the room where your computer is located; and connect both devices to the respective adapters with the Ethernet cables included in the package. The HomePlug technology will establish a data connection over the home's power lines, adding that computer to the existing home network for sharing of Internet connections and peripherals as well as multiplayer gaming. If the HomePlug adapters are being used to build a new network, more adapters can be used to add more devices.

The product delivers throughput of 14 Mbps for fast computing and incorporates 56 -bit DES encryption to ensure that neighbors cannot hack into the user's network.

Extend Wireless Networks into Hard -To -Reach Areas
The Actiontec HomePlug Wireless Kit is designed for homes with wireless networks in which an attic, garage or other area is out of range of the wireless router and impossible to bring online without cabling. Simply plug the HomePlug Ethernet adapter in the package into a power outlet near your cable/DSL router, and plug the access point into another power outlet where you want to enable a wireless network. All wireless -capable devices within 150 feet of the second outlet will be online.

The power line will carry the Internet signal from the Ethernet adapter to the access point, creating an instant wireless network in areas that would remain out of reach without expensive cabling. Outlying computers can not only access the Internet but also connect to other networked PCs and printers in the house.

The kit secures the HomePlug network with 56 -bit DES encryption and the WiFi network with 64/128 -bit WEP or WPA technology, preventing neighbors and hackers from intercepting email, business documents or other sensitive information. Transfer rates are up to 14 Mbps over the HomePlug connection and up to 54 Mbps over the WiFi connection for rapid throughput.

Pricing, Specifications and Availability
The Actiontec HomePlug Ethernet Adapter Kit ($129.99 for two HomePlug Ethernet adapters) and the Actiontec HomePlug Wireless Kit ($169.99 consisting of a HomePlug Ethernet adapter and access point) will be available in February at Both products come with a Quick Start Guide, an installation CD -ROM, and a user manual on CD -ROM.
