Leading TV Manufacturers to Incorporate Gemstar-TV Guide`s TV Guide On Screen into 2004 HDTV Sets

Los Angeles, CA - September 9, 2004 - Enabling viewers to seamlessly navigate their extensive HDTV programming choices, Gemstar -TV Guide International, Inc.'s (NASDAQ: GMST) TV Guide On Screen interactive program guide (IPG) will be incorporated into 17 new Digital Cable Ready HDTV sets and/or digital video recorders from four leading manufacturers. The only IPG available for HDTV sets using CableCARD technology, TV Guide On Screen helps viewers easily navigate, sort, select, and schedule television programming for viewing and recording, with simple, one -touch remote control commands - and without a subscription fee. CableCARD 'plug and play' technology enables viewers to receive HDTV programs from their cable system provider without a separate set -top box.

"The launch of the national 'plug and play' digital cable standard makes the HDTV transition seamless for consumers," said Doug Macrae, president, TV Guide Consumer Electronics. "For cable subscribers who are accustomed to using an IPG, TV Guide On Screen provides them with a familiar and simplified viewing experience. As the only IPG available for HDTV sets using CableCARD technology, we're providing consumers with a quick and efficient reference guide for locating HD programming and planning their TV viewing."

The latest versions of TV Guide On Screen features HD tagging and sorting capabilities - HD icons in the listings grid indicate what shows are available in HD in consumers' viewing areas, and a special menu provides a complete list of HDTV programming at a glance.

TV Guide On Screen is being incorporated into digital cable ready TV sets, including models from Toshiba and Mitsubishi, that will arrive at retail this fall. In addition, two HD digital video recorders from Sony will include TV Guide On Screen's IPG in the U.S. market.

TV Guide On Screen's convenient features include eight days of local program listings, along with descriptions for broadcast and cable; one -touch program tuning; and recording and reminder settings. Color -coded program genres help viewers quickly identify, search and sort categories such as movies, sports, and children's programming. Programs can also be searched and sorted alphabetically, or by a title keyword. The guide also features a Video Window which lets viewers monitor the last channel tuned while viewing program listings, or preview channels as they scroll through listings.

Gemstar -TV Guide's patented technology delivers regularly updated program listings to users, regardless of whether they receive their television signal via cable or over -the -air broadcast. The IPG works by simply plugging in the television or recording device and activating the guide through an express set -up process. The guide requires no subscription or phone connection and is available at no extra cost to the consumer.

TV Guide On Screen is an IPG that is built directly into consumer electronics products, including digital televisions, digital video recorders (DVRs) and DVD recorders. The guide offers interactive on -screen program listings from TV Guide, the most trusted name in television guidance.
