Central Vacuum Systems Come of Age

WEBSTER CITY, Iowa - - Sept. 8, 2004 - - Consumer demands for greater home convenience and healthier living environments are driving the central vacuum system industry toward unprecedented growth in 2004. After decades of modest growth, the industry, as a whole is recording double -digit sales increases over the previous year, with many dealers experiencing sales increases of 50 percent or greater.
"Central vacuum systems have come of age," says John Coghlan, president of Beam Industries, the industry's largest manufacturer. "Homeowners are catching on that the superior cleaning power and built -in convenience of a central vacuum system, and they're insisting on central vacuums when they purchase new homes or renovate existing homes," he says.
Coghlan would not disclose specific sales figures for Beam, which manufactures its flagship, Beam brand, as well as Electrolux and Eureka Central Vacuum Systems. However, he says Beam's 2004 sales are running "well ahead of the industry" in 2004. He noted most of Beam's dealers are experiencing growth of 20 percent or more this year.
Paul DeMaio, owner of Built -in Home Solutions, Stuart, Fla., is among the nation's fastest growing dealers. He says a combination of the homebuilding boon and a growing consumer demand for healthier homes have combined to fuel a significant increase in his central vacuum business, so much so that DeMaio recently opened a second location in Vero Beach.
"Clean air is really starting to hit home," says DeMaio. "People are more concerned about asthma, dust and the living environment."
Making consumers aware of the indoor air quality benefit of central vacuum systems has been a high priority, adds Coghlan. A recent clinical study by the Division of Allergy and Immunology at the University of California, Davis, found that use of a Beam Central Vacuum System improved allergy symptoms by 46 percent to 61 percent. They study results have convinced organizations such as the American Lung Association to require central vacuum systems in healthy home demonstration projects and numerous green building organizations now recommend participating builders include central vacuum systems to address indoor air quality concerns.
"Because we're in the middle of the desert, dust and indoor air quality are a big concern," adds Greg Simmons, co -owner of Eagle Sentry, Las Vegas, Nev. "Builders are now requesting central vacuum systems right off the bat."
A complete system represents a relatively modest investment, starting at around $1,000, for a typical 2,000 square foot home and often can increase the value of a home by as much or more than the cost of the system.
