Feature-Packed Plasma and Microdisplay Sets Receive Cable HDTV without Set-Top Box
INDIANAPOLIS, Sept. 8, 2004 - Bringing a new level of flexibility and performance to digital high -definition television (HDTV), LG Electronics has introduced its first "Digital Cable Ready" plasma and microdisplay HDTVs.
These feature -packed HDTVs, three plasma and a microdisplay model, combine LG's new "XD Engine™" for optimum high -definition picture performance with LG's most advanced digital television (DTV) tuning system, for cable and over -the -air HDTV reception.
At CEDIA Expo 2004 here today, Robert A. Perry, vice president, consumer electronics sales, LG Electronics U.S.A., Inc., explained that Digital Cable Ready HDTVs, equipped with a "CableCARD" provided by local cable operators, receive premium cable programming, including HDTV services -without the need for a separate set -top box.
"For the first time, consumers will be able to enjoy boxless HDTV via cable, which is expected to further accelerate the DTV transition," said Perry, who led the consumer electronics negotiations with the cable industry for the Federal Communications Commission's "plug and play" digital cable standard that took effect July 1. "What's more," he said, "LG Digital Cable Ready HDTVs include the Gemstar TV Guide Onscreen program guide, providing superior navigation to cable -system program guides."
Leading LG's Digital Cable Ready HDTV lineup is a series of high -performance integrated plasma display panel (PDP) HDTVs. These 60 -, 50 - and 42 -inch widescreen HDTVs deliver stunning high -definition images enhanced by LG's exclusive XD Engine technologies (see separate news release).
New plasma panels deliver 1000 cd/m2 brightness and a contrast ratio of 5000:1, while four exclusive image -sticking prevention options reduce the "screen burn -in" issues inherent in plasma displays. Inputs include HDMI, IEEE -1394, RS -232C and PC. LG's 42 - and 50 -inch models also feature the company's exclusive 60,000 -hour "DoubleLife" technology, as well as built -in stands and speakers for ease of installation.
Suggested list prices are $14,999 for 60 -inch Model DU -60PY10, $6,999 for 50 -inch Model DU -50PY10 and $5,499 for 42 -inch Model DU -42PY10X. All three models are planned for fall delivery.
Rounding out LG's Digital Cable Ready lineup is LG's new, integrated rear -projection Digital Light Processing (DLP™) model that delivers big, bright HDTV images in a compact package. Model DU -52SZ61D is a 52 -inch integrated HDTV that incorporates LG's fifth -generation ATSC tuner and features Texas Instruments' 1280 x 720p HD2+ chip. Model DU -52SZ61D offers advanced connectivity options including HDMI, IEEE -1394 and RGB, as well as dual -tuner PIP, POP and split -screen options, 3D Y/C comb filter, 3:2 pulldown cinema correction, and Dolby SRS TruSurround Sound.
