Close to triple attendance in as many years shows an escalating interest in convergence coming from both IT and CE resellers. D&H`s Expo attendees raised issues and explored new technologies relative to the new digital marketplace.
HARRISBURG, PA, July 27, 2004 - Attendance at D&H`s Digital Convergence Trade Show exceeded 800 people at the July 21 event, illustrating the significant growth and interest in this evolving sector. The distributor brought together representatives from more than 600 IT resellers, CE retailers and dealers, custom home installers, and specialized A/V and home security dealers to meet with leading digital technology vendors, taking advantage of exhibits, educational seminars and special customer discount opportunities. Attendance broke down to include 70% IT resellers, 20% CE retailers and dealers, and another 10% mix of home entertainment, home security and gaming dealers.
The Expo offered 22 rotating seminars from Intel, Microsoft, Bosch (home security), On -Q Home (structured wiring), ViewSonic, Panasonic, CompTIA (the Computing Technology Industry Association), Hawking Technology (wireless networking), Russound (distributed audio) and D&H`s Gaming Division.
Highly -regarded sessions included Microsoft`s `A Day in the Life of the Media PC,` presented by Microsoft e -Business Technology Specialist Michael Gannotti; `Digital Home and the Intel Channel Initiatives,` presented by Intel North American Channel Marketing Manager Todd Garrigues; and `Structured Wiring and How to Sell it to Home Builders,` presented by On -Q Home`s Vice President of Marketing David Hanchette.
Hot products showcased at the event included Philips` DVD -R device with hard disc recorder (the first such units to be launched in the US), the vendor`s Ambilight 42` flat TVs, and its MX6000i home theatre system with a wireless PC link; Panasonic`s PT -50DL54 50` diagonal projection DLP television; BenQ`s new 16X internal DVD -ROM drives, which offer some of the fastest speeds on the market; the Harmony Remote home entertainment controller, now being offered by IT manufacturer Logitech; Hawking Technology`s Hi -Gain antennas, which help expand wireless networks; and Mirra`s personal file servers.
The morning keynote panel comprised a range of industry experts: Digital Connect Editor Jeff O`Heir, EH Publishing Co -founder Julie Jacobson, CEA (the Consumer Electronics Association) Director of Industry Analysis Sean Wargo, Intel`s Todd Garrigues; plus integrators Ken Bosley, CEO of World Premiere Home Entertainment; and Tim Klan, CEO of Expert Computers. Attendees and panelists raised issues that are facing both IT and CE -based providers, such as the low incidence of true plug -and -play convergence solutions (an advantage for integrators offering support services); falling price points on CE products; contrasting `to -market` strategies between IT vendors and specialized CE retailers and installers; and the potential for CE/IT partnerships.
`Through forums like our Expo, we uncover paradigm shifts that will be vital to future sales,` said Dan Schwab, vice president of marketing at D&H. `For instance, our keynote panel revealed that entertainment products like flat screen displays are now being considered peripherals to a home network, which is very much in contrast to how they were being sold just a year ago. The 55 manufacturers in attendance (including new D&H vendors such as ClearOne, Hi -Touch Imaging, TomTom and Mirra) displayed cutting -edge products ranging from audio conferencing technology to personal GPS systems, from home storage servers to multifunctional remote controls, from audio streaming devices to digital printing systems. Vendors also explained their new digital convergence promotion programs, such as Intel`s `Digital Home` initiative, which helps providers learn about and market products in different convergence categories. The show featured D&H`s three -room `Connected Home` exhibit, a fully functional bedroom/livingroom/office demo that boasted a state -of -the -art business center, a photographic printing center, a PC -based livingroom media center with a flat -screen LCD display, personal video recording capabilities, and distributed audio.
