Freescale Semiconductor unleashes next wave of ColdFire® products

Freescale has today announced four new ColdFire families - MCF547x, MCF548x, MCF523x and MCF527x - designed to offer a higher level of connectivity, control and security through some of the most flexible processors available today.

New 32 -bit embedded processor families optimize industrial and network -connected control applications

AUSTIN, Texas - May 17, 2004 - Freescale Semiconductor, Inc., a wholly owned subsidiary of Motorola, Inc. (NYSE:MOT), has unveiled four new ColdFire® families - MCF547x, MCF548x, MCF523x and MCF527x - made up of more than 20 processors. These families of embedded 32 -bit microprocessors are designed to offer a higher level of connectivity, control and security through some of the most flexible processors available today.

The new families are designed to reduce memory requirements, power dissipation, system board size and costs in a variety of industrial applications. With the release of these devices, Freescale is providing customers with high -performance processors that enable multiple levels of integration - all adaptable and easily integrated with memories, systems modules and peripherals.

Application examples range from large -scale factory automation to more precise healthcare related instrumentation. Whether for robotics, security, retail point -of -sale scanners and terminals or other commercial implementations, these ColdFire devices enable a consistent level of protection features, connectivity and control.

`As innovators in microprocessor -based control systems, we continue to rely on sophisticated technologies to serve as the foundation for our touch panels, keypads and other automation systems,` said Fred Bargetzi, Crestron`s vice president of technology. `Freescale`s ColdFire embedded controllers have served as the main processor for key functions such as graphic rendering, network interface and multi -window video display. Later this year, we`ll incorporate one of the new ColdFire devices into our expanding line of Isys® touch panels.`

New processor families drive networked applications
Freescale`s new ColdFire families contain some advanced capabilities over previous ColdFire devices, including an enhanced Time Processing Unit (eTPU).

The MCF547x and MCF548x families of microprocessors - the first to feature the V4e ColdFire core - are some of the most highly integrated ColdFire standard products to date. These devices offer a vast selection of connectivity with robust encryption options while enabling competitive system solution costs for customers.

Devices from these V4e -based families are capable of delivering up to 410 MIPS at 266 MHz. The MCF548x meets industrial temperature demands and is one of the first dual -CAN (controller area network), dual -Ethernet processors available today.

Flexibility through innovative peripherals
The MCF523x family, based on the V2 ColdFire core, is designed specifically for embedded industrial control and motor control applications that require connectivity. This family features the industry`s leading enhanced Time Processing Unit (eTPU), a real -time control co -processor dedicated to performing high -speed, complex timing and input/output, freeing up the central processing unit (CPU) for other tasks.

The MCF523x family also serves as a natural migration path and upgrade for Freescale MC68332 customers requiring higher performance and/or networking support.

Other on -chip features include integrated CAN and Ethernet interfaces along with cryptography acceleration for cost -effective processors used in networked and stand -alone complex real -time control applications. The ColdFire core on these families includes an enhanced Multiply -Accumulate Unit (eMAC) providing high performance of 144 MIPS (Dhrystone 2.1) at 150 MHz.

Connection with protection
The MCF527x family builds upon the peripheral mix of the MCF5272 processor to provide a powerful combination of connection, protection and peripheral selection. This family is designed for cost -sensitive applications that require significant control processing for file management, connectivity, data buffering, user interface and signal processing in a variety of key markets such as security, imaging, networking and gaming.

These devices offer an upgrade at no additional cost for current MCF5272 users - with added performance, a second 10/100 Mbps Ethernet MAC and hardware encryption to help ensure the application can enable secure communication.

To support these ColdFire families, Freescale has developed an affordable companion power management integrated circuit (IC), the MC34710. The MCF34710 offers built -in flexibility through user -adjustable voltages, which allow reduced power dissipation by removing or lowering voltages under MCU control. This helps reduce design time, procurement costs and risk.

A commitment to developer support
Freescale Semiconductor is committed to helping customers get products to market easier and faster through direct development support and services, as well as help with migration from 68k devices via free translators and tools.

Through partnerships with world -class tool suppliers, including Metrowerks, ARC, Green Hills, Wind River and other independent development tool suppliers, customers have access to broad operating system support (including Metrowerks for Linux®), as well as evaluation boards and other hardware and software development tools.
