New Products Deliver Legendary PSB Sonics to the Field of Custom Installation

PSB Speakers, Pickering, ON, April 27th, 2004 - PSB Speakers, long renowned for affordable excellence, is developing a number of new loudspeakers aimed at the custom installation segment of consumer electronics.

Expanding their offerings of in -wall speakers and adding in -cabinet system solutions is a logical move for this Canadian company since it is no secret that custom installation is driving the consumer electronics market these days. "It is our intention to be a leader in custom installation with the traditional PSB attributes of great sound quality and value, plus a fresh look and novel thinking about how customers want to blend sound equipment into their decor," says David Smith, Director of Product Development for PSB.

To augment its successful six -inch series of in -wall speakers, PSB is showing a line of higher performance eight -inch models. Two unique eight -inch coax models, the CW180R [round] and CW180S [square] feature a tweeter that is mated to the proprietary PSB SonicGuide™. The PSB SonicGuide can be tilted 30 degrees left or right and the whole assembly can be turned 90 degrees. This provides constant directivity to the listening area whether the speaker is mounted on the wall or on the ceiling. With the use of the PSB SonicGuide the tweeter's high end response is smooth at any angle, and reflections from the woofer are greatly reduced compared to other coax designs.

PSB, building on the success of its series of six inch driver based in -walls has searched for systems with even greater performance. The result of this research was the model CW383, which uses an eight -inch woofer, in a three -way design. The midrange and tweeter assembly rotate so that the system can be used horizontally or vertically.

A fourth model, the CWS8 uses a dual eight -inch subwoofer that shares the same mounting frame and visually mates well with the CW383. Looking extensively at the in -wall environment, PSB came up with a subwoofer design that works surprisingly well with the unknown volume each wall presents and the typically less -than -rigid wall construction. It features high excursion woofers for the output levels that movie lovers demand.

With the popularity of in -wall systems today, and PSB's belief that smarter designs will let the customer have the "invisible look" without any sonic compromise, they are rolling out In -wall and In -Cabinet counterparts to their highly regarded T8 Platinum Tower loudspeaker.

The CW800E Enclosed In -Wall uses components from the PSB Platinum T8 in a
3 and 3/4 -inch deep enclosure, effectively capturing most of the performance of the T8, less a few Hertz of bass extension. The specialized woofer design along with some novel crossover circuitry, allows the woofer to perform exceedingly well with restricted air volume. The enclosure of the Platinum In -Wall mates to the wall with an aluminum extrusion -based flange and easy to use 'dog leg' mounting clamps. A perforated metal grille completes the look and can be easily painted to match any decor.

The other Platinum spin -off are the CHS60 and CHS80 In -Cabinet Systems, which is essentially a T6 and T8 Tower, respectively, optimized for installation inside a cabinet providing a high performance custom hidden solution. "Many customers were buying our conventional floor standing models and using them in purpose -built AV equipment cabinets. But this was far from ideal," says Mr. Smith.

When mounting a system in a cabinet the surrounding cabinetry adds 'chestiness' to the system's sound. Frequently, LCR speaker arrays are mounted behind perforated video screens that result in high frequency roll off. Moreover, the physical dimensions of a floor standing speaker are generally not appropriate for mounting inside a cabinet plus the elegant furniture finishes are not necessary since they are being hidden.

The CHS60 and CHS80 In -Cabinet system addresses all of these issues starting with components from the T6 and T8 Platinum Tower, respectively, and a new crossover network that deals with boundary issues and compensates for perforated screens. The CHS212, an In -cabinet version of the Platinum SubSonic 10, mounts one 12 -inch woofer facing forward, with a second one that downfires to allow low frequencies to easily exit the equipment cabinet. The cabinets for the CHS60, CHS80 and CHS212 are more squared and finished in tough texture paints to better suit them to in -cabinet installations. "With these products PSB offers installers the flexibility to meet their clients needs with a range of high performance, high value in -cabinet, in -wall and in -room loudspeaker solutions", says Jim Price, Director of Sales & Marketing for PSB Speakers of America.
