A Power Line Communication (PLC) Automatic Meter Reading (AMR) system, using ITRAN Communications' (www.ITRANcomm.com) IT800D High Performance PLC modem chip, has been introduced and demonstrated last week by its developer, Century Controls of Bangalore, India (www.centurysystech.com).

The demonstration included a pole mounted metering cubicle and four cluster meters with a comprehensive billing system. Each of Century's pole mounted metering cubicles can cater to 18 single -phase cluster meters and each cluster meter can cater to 4 consumers. The robust Repeater Protocol in each of the pole mounted metering cubicles and cluster meters permits the existing customers to be read automatically without having to change their existing power wiring.
