PCS Receives Grant From California Energy Commission

Energy Innovations Small Grant Program Funds UPB Research

Northridge, September 10, 2003: Powerline Control Systems, Inc.'s Universal Powerline Bus (UPB) technology takes another quantum step forward with the approval of a California Energy Commission grant to investigate the application of UPB powerline communication for use in the commercial/industrial environment. The grant, funded by the Public Interest Energy Research (PIER) Program, provides up to $80,000 to small businesses, non -profits, individuals and academic institutions to conduct research that establishes the feasibility of new, innovative energy concepts. The grant was awarded to PCS for "New Powerline Technology for the Control of Lighting and HVAC". The grant is for research in the area of Energy Systems Integration.

The PIER grant will fund extensive real world testing of the UPB Technology in a large number of commercial three -phase buildings. PCS has developed sophisticated PC -based test equipment and software to perform long -term testing and to gather relevant statistical information on noise, attenuation, and reliability.

"We believe UPB can dramatically affect the way energy is used in the home and in commercial installations," says Marshall Lester, CEO and Founder of Powerline Control Systems, Inc. "By enabling a reliable means of communicating control signals using existing wiring, we also enable sophisticated control of a variety of devices including lights, appliances, heating and cooling systems - virtually any device that connects to the powerline."

PCS is looking for companies who are interested in licensing the technology in their own products, as well as manufacturing a line of residential lighting control products that will be available by mid -September. There are currently three commercial lighting equipment manufacturers who have entered into licensing or joint development agreements with PCS.
