Editorial - Bob HetheringtonSo ... waddya think of the new look? Much of the credit goes to the graphics department (thanks Luke). Please take a minute and fill in the survey so we know what you think or send your comments (compliments I hope) to news@hometoys.com . Since a lot of late nights went into this facelift I'd appreciate it if you'd let me know of any broken links or other ugly stuff.

In case you haven't noticed ... we're being inundated with "Home Networking" buzz. Websites, magazines, books and probably t-shirts and board games are cropping up daily. But what does it all mean? I don't think anyone will really know until Mr(s). Consumer decides what he/she is going to buy into. What I am happy to see though is some of the of more traditional Home Automation companies beginning to fight back against the PC network crowd. After all ... the first I ever heard of a Home Network had nothing whatsoever to do with networking computers at home and everything to do with providing a network for appliances, entertainment systems, security systems etc. to communicate with each other. Don't get me wrong ... sharing fast internet connections, files and printers between PC's is awesome ... but it ain't Home Networking. It will, however, help to sell Home Networking due to the popularity of the internet, the cash available for the PC industry to market and the general level of understanding of what PC networks are.

This issue features Home Entertainment Networks. Unfortunately I didn't get as much input on this topic as I had hoped (bad timing on my part ... CEDIA kept everyone pretty busy). Maybe I need to define what my vision of a Home Entertainment Network is. I want to use one interface from any room in the house to control all of my entertainment stuff (TV, VCR, Stereo, DVD ... whatever). If I'm watching a DVD movie in the family room and the kids come home with a bunch of rowdy friends I want to move to my den and continue watching ... without missing a beat. All the while recording another movie on the VCR and learning to limbo with picture in picture. I want this network to work seamlessly with my home network (lighting, security etc.) and in an ideal world ... I want to use the same interface for all. Well, if you read through this issue you'll see that much of this is possible today ... and all of it will be possible very soon.

Next issue is going to be a very interesting one ... "Home Office Networks". We're a pretty small operation here at HomeToys and we work out of a Home Office. To pull this off without losing hair, technology and networking is essential. Computers, telephones, fax machines, printers, fast internet ... you name it ...  we need it. And it needs to work every time (which it doesn't). And it needs to be simple (which it isn't). Got any solutions? Let's hear about it. Send your articles, letters etc. to me at bobh@hometoys.com .
