Is your home "future-proof"?

Cutler-Hammer's Advanced Power Products gives your home the flexibility to handle the changes in energy management and home automation that lie ahead.

Electrical systems can sound complex to a homeowner, but the Cutler-Hammer family of products make it simple. We have put together a simple, four-step process for offering a complete Advanced Power Products system-and a home that's prepared for the future.

Step 1: Choose the Right Loadcenter
Preparing the electrical infrastructure of a home for the future starts with the Cutler-Hammer Advanced Power CenterTM (APC). This loadcenter-sometimes referred to as a fuse box or circuit breaker box-is the foundation for simple, affordable energy management and the platform for a home control system.

Installing a Power Center now will provide the homeowner with a system that's future ready and flexible enough to accommodate new features as their in-home electrical needs change over time.

Step 2: Additional Protection with Cutler-Hammer Products
Additional Cutler-Hammer products can help protect the house's electrical system as well as the customer's family, home, and expensive electronic equipment from fires and power surges.

  • Arc Fault Circuit Interrupters (AFCIs) reduce the risk of residential electrical fires. Ordinary circuit breakers do not always detect arcing faults-low and erratic current flow-that can cause electrical fires. The technology used in an AFCI "recognizes" the telltale characteristics of an arcing fault and trips the breaker to interrupt the current as a warning of a potentially dangerous situation.
  • The Complete Home Surge Protector (CHSP) is the first three-way surge/lightning protector that guards electrical service, TV cable, and two telephone lines from one convenient unit. The CHSP protects home electronic equipment from spikes, surges, and nearby lightning, offering maximum protection at 39,000 amps. Tested in harsh industrial environments, the home version of the CHSP extends the warranty on Cutler-Hammer loadcenter products by five years.

Step 3: Energy Management and Home Control Options
Cutler-Hammer's Advanced Power Center(TM) is designed for the easy addition of components for energy management and home control options. The three primary components are:

  1. Power Circuit Interrupters(TM) (remote-controlled circuit breakers used to control electrical loads) make it possible to manage dedicated circuits for larger electrical loads, such as air conditioners, water heaters, pool and hot tub pumps, and lighting. The PCIs are UL-approved and UL-classified for installation in most manufacturer's loadcenters.
  2. Power Sensors(TM) are connected to individual circuit breakers or a main circuit breaker to provide utility grade metering at branch circuits or the whole house. They monitor energy consumption, making whole-house and branch metering possible.
  3. Power Manager(TM) -the electronic module or "brain"-is mounted in the Power Center to collect energy consumption data from the sensors, control the power circuit interrupters, and communicate with the user-interface devices described in Step 4.

Step 4: Put Control at Your Fingertips with a Home Control Partner
Homeowners can increase the functionality of their Cutler-Hammer system by selecting products from one of CH's partners. These home automation systems are designed to interface with Cutler-Hammer's Advanced Power Center, providing your customer with applications that go beyond load control and energy management. As described in this issue of Current Builder, Cutler-Hammer has teamed with the reliable brands of IBM, Savoy Systems, Smart Corp, Unity Systems, and Home Automation, Inc., to provide an array of user-controlled interfaces that provide enhanced comfort, convenience, and control to your customer's home through cost-effective devices-such as a "smart phone," "smart thermostat," keypad, or computer software program. In addition, the complete system makes setting up a home Internet connection even easier.
