ORiNOCO™ WIRELESS NETWORK AIDS CRISIS CENTER

The Rape & Suicide Crisis Center of Southeast Texas (Beaumont, TX) needed to be able to add computers to its network whenever it wanted and also needed to be able to move furniture to accommodate new workers without having to re-cable the office network. In addition, the center wanted to connect all of their computers to a single DSL Internet connection so that all staff members could access the Internet. The center ended up selecting an Agere Systems ORiNOCO™ wireless network as the solution best able to provide the security and confidentiality it required, as well as the flexibility and freedom it needed to keep its operation up and running smoothly and economically.

Founded in the fall of 1973, the Rape & Suicide Crisis Center of Southeast Texas, Inc. is a United Way agency that provides information and assistance to individuals and their families who are survivors of sexual assault, general crisis, and suicide. The agency serves the Southeast Texas community through volunteer advocates and speakers.

The center offers an advocacy program, crisis counseling and referrals, medical and legal accompaniments and information, support groups, community education and public speaking, and a 24-hour crisis hotline (409-835-3355, or 1-800-7-WE-CARE) that people can call. In the year 2000, the crisis hotline averaged 100 crisis related calls per month with crisis intervention given to over 600 rape survivors and over 1,200 services were provided. The center is also in the process of developing an Internet-based resource library to assist and provide information to individuals who need it.

Not only does the Rape & Suicide Crisis Center of Southeast Texas rely heavily on its computers for office and administrative work, but also for keeping track of incoming calls to the crisis hotline.

When crisis center advocates receive calls on the hotline, the advocate who handles the call documents details such as number of incoming calls per day, number of those calls that were rape survivors, whether the caller had survived date rape or stranger rape, and demographic information such as age, sex, and occupation of the caller into this computer. The advocate must then forwards this information to crisis center staff, which enters the information into the center's computer system for follow-up to calls. The information is then transmitted to the Attorney General's office in Austin, Texas for statistical analysis. This ability is critical to the center's operations.

In the summer of 2001, the center had a DSL Internet connection installed to make the exchange of information faster and easier for all workstations. The center wanted all computers in its office to be able to connect to the DSL line at any time. Around this same time, the center needed to replace two computers that had become obsolete, and it needed to reorganize its office space to accommodate additional computers and advocates.

The center distributed requests for multiple bids to have a hardwired network installed in the office. However, after an agency volunteer introduced them to wireless networking, the center realized that a wireless network would allow the freedom and mobility it needed. They would be able to rearrange office space to accommodate additional staff without having to punch holes through walls and furniture. Furthermore, the center realized that a wireless network would provide the required file sharing and Internet connectivity with the Attorney General's office it needed. Even better, a wireless network was far less expensive than a wired network. In fact, the volunteer who originally introduced the center to wireless networking equipment installed the network for free.

The decision was made. The center decided to invest in ORiNOCO wireless networking equipment from Lucent Technologies (this division is now part of Agere Systems) and began installation immediately. One Agere ORiNOCO Residential Gateway (RG-1000) base station was positioned in the lobby of the center's office, and an Agere ORiNOCO USB Client was plugged into five desktop computers throughout the center.

The RG-1000 base station, roughly the size and shape of a clothes iron, is able to provide wireless Internet and network access for up to 30 individual users. The center's DSL connection was hooked directly to the RG-1000, which that then distributes the broadband access to USB client radios connected to the various desktop computers located throughout the center. In case the DSL Internet connection ever goes down, the RG-1000 also includes a 56K modem connection that will work with a standard dial-up Internet connection.

The plug and play USB Client devices made it easy to connect the center's desktop computers to the wireless network.

"It was so simple to set-up," said Ira Wilsker, volunteer network installer for the Rape & Suicide Crisis Center of Southeast Texas. "I just plugged the USB Client into the USB slots on the outside of the desktop computer, install the software, and had the computers up and running on the wireless network within minutes."

The ORiNOCO wireless network enables the center's staff to share files and send documents to the printers, all without the need for cables or wires. The wireless network also allows the center to use the high-speed DSL Internet connection to send and receive email, perform Internet research, and securely transmit confidential information from its 24-hour rape and suicide crisis hotline to the Attorney General's office for statistical purposes.

Confidentiality is very important to the Rape & Suicide Crisis Center of Southeast Texas. When a caller's statistical information is transmitted to the Attorney General's office over the center's DSL Internet connection, the caller's name and contact information must remain completely confidential. Not only does this protect the privacy of the caller, it is vital to their safety. It is for this reason that the center invested in the higher-security Gold USB Clients that provide 128-bit "Gold" encryption rather than the standard 64 bit silver cards. For an RG-1000-based wireless network, 128-bit encryption is the highest level of security available for the RG-1000 wireless network.

"We are so pleased with our wireless network," said Cheryl Williams, Executive Director of the Rape & Suicide Crisis Center of Southeast Texas. "I had no idea this technology was so readily available to us, and it is unbelievable how easy it was to network all of our computers and get us up on the Internet and networked together. With our growing staff and, hence, frequent reorganization of office space, it's a wonder how we would have survived with a hardwired network."

The center plans to continue adding computers to its wireless network. It may also begin using PDAs, Pocket PCs, and other portable handheld computing devices on its wireless network. These devices can be utilized by advocates in police stations and hospital emergency rooms to interview rape survivors, as they are far less imposing than laptop computers.

Wilsker said that the set-up and use of the ORiNOCO wireless network at the Rape & Suicide Crisis Center of Southeast Texas was so easy and convenient that he decided to install an ORiNOCO wireless network at home. He purchased another RG-1000 base station and positioned it in his 15 year old daughter's bedroom, where she reclines on the bed with the laptop and surfs the net and chats online with friends, all without cables and wires! Wilsker is soon going to move a new desktop computer into another room in his house, for which he'll purchase another ORiNOCO USB Client. The family will soon benefit from a cable modem so he and his family will be able to enjoy the high speed Internet access throughout the entire house.

The Rape & Suicide Crisis Center of Southeast Texas is located in Beaumont, TX. The center can be reached at 409-832-6530. The 24-hour, toll-free crisis hotline is: 1-800-7-WE-CARE. The center relies heavily on contributions. Interested parties may mail contributions to: P.O. Box 3208 / Beaumont, TX, 77704. We thank you in advance for your contributions.

With ORiNOCO, Morristown Financial Group “wows” clients and avoided doubling their networking expenses

The Client: Morristown financial group is a New Jersey-based financial planning and services firm that uses a mix of older WaveLAN and new ORiNOCO equipment from Agere Systems for their wireless network. The system uses a wireless access point connected to a hub to share a 1.5M bit/sec DSL connection. The wireless network supports 14 desktops, 4 laptops, and 2 printers. The firm originally selected the WavePOINT II (now called AP1000) access point because its dual slot architecture could support twice as many users as single slot access points and also provides an easy migration path to new wireless technologies as they develop.

The Opportunity: The firm started expanding five years ago, and managing partner John Hyland faced a substantial capital expense decision. If he hired the additional employees that the firm needed, he would also need a networking system so that the additional employees could easily share documents. But the firm was going to be relocating within the year, and he didn’t want to pay twice for network installation and cabling. “We were growing rapidly and knew we needed to relocate. We didn’t want to spend time and money wiring the office space and then three months later abandon it. So the wireless solution was perfect because we could just unplug it and take it with us to the new space.”

In 1998, Hyland hired a New Jersey company called InvisiNet, to install the workstations. The first system was only a 2 MB system. In 1999, the firm upgraded to 11 MBs. After InvisiNet installed the access point and the network cards in the various computers and laptops, Hyland said that implementing the new system was very fast, simple, and problem-free, and the staff easily adjusted.

Hyland decided to fully integrate the wireless network into his office. One hundred percent of his employees — all 14 workstations — are on the ORiNOCO wireless network. Their DSL Internet connects to an Efficient Networks Flow point hub. In turn, that connects to the ORiNOCO wireless access point. There are no cables connecting the various desktop and laptop computers to the access point — his network is totally wireless.

According to EJ von Schaumburg, InvisiNet’s CEO, “Morristown Financial Group has moved four times, and all Hyland’s had to do is turn off the computers, move them, then turn them back on, and the network is up and ready to go. It’s great because he doesn’t have to wire the office — an office he does not own! He literally has one piece of wire that goes from the DSL to the access point.”

The Future: Morristown Financial Group sees many opportunities cropping up that will utilize the wireless connectivity. For one, the firm has found that the wireless technology (Agere Systems’ ORiNOCO products) has helped them to “wow” their clients. “It’s a nice feature to be able to sit at the conference room table with wireless laptops connected to the Internet and show clients immediately how to remotely access their accounts. According to Hyland, “It’s much more impressive than pulling them into my office and turning on my desktop. It’s a “wow” factor. We work with a lot of clients who are a little older, so this technology is really impressive to them.”

Hyland says that the firm is also able to work with a neighboring accounting firm with much more ease than a wired network would have allowed. “We’re doing some partnering with a CPA firm that is on the same floor as us, and the wireless solution allows us to share files easily on the network. The CPA firm will be buying the technology for one or two work stations so that our two companies can work together on this project easily.” Certain files on the network are protected so that only staff with a password can access them. Other files are accessible to anyone on the network.

ORiNOCO Solution: The AP-1000 is compatible with the entire ORiNOCO wireless product line. It provides full wireless networking functionality at 11 Mbit/s speed (802.11b), comes with a choice of either 64-bit or 128-bit encryption. Morristown uses 64-bit encryption.

When Morristown brings on new employees, all the firm has to do is install a new wireless card in the laptop. For desktop computers, Morristown Financial is now using the easy to install, plug & play USB radios instead of PC Cards and ISA/PCI adapters. After the card or USB radio is installed, John Hyland issues the new employees their own password and they are ready to go to work.

Benefits:  The ORiNOCO wireless network system enables mobile professionals to connect wirelessly to their network and provides full access to their email, important files, and the Internet — all at Ethernet network performance levels. In addition to the Access Point base stations, the ORiNOCO solution consists of Type II PC cards for notebook computers and mobile computing devices, USB radios for desktops computers, and Ethernet/serial port adapters for legacy devices.

John Hyland liked his office wireless set up so much that he hooked up an identical wireless network at home. He explains that “this gives him the flexibility to sit anywhere in the house and access the internet. It’s nice that I can be sitting with my family watching the TV, but still get work done. So there’s some quality of life enhancement. And it’s much easier to keep an eye on the kids!”

At home, Hyland uses the RG-1000 Residential Gateway. This allows him to go from home to office and be fully connected. The ORiNOCO set-up software on his laptop permits multiple configurations to allow for 4 different wireless network profiles. His wireless network profile at home is the same as that of his office, so it’s extremely simple to use.  “Hyland doesn’t have to know anything about how it works. He just knows it works,” says EJ von Schaumburg.

Why ORiNOCO? The ORiNOCO wireless network system makes it easy to add new users to a network. ORiNOCO is inexpensive, unobtrusive, and flexible. It provides an easy to install and manage wireless network at an affordable price. The ORiNOCO access point can be expanded to include a second card, so Morristown can create a wireless links instead of running cable to create 2 overlapping but separate coverage cells.

ORiNOCO AP-1000 Access Point is the wireless access point for the 802.11b (Wi-Fi) compliant 11 Mbit/s ORiNOCO Enterprise Solution. ORiNOCO AP-1000 extends the range of a cabled Ethernet network, providing easy network access to mobile users and difficult to wire locations. The unique architecture features dual PC card slots. Compared with its predecessor, WavePoint-II, AP-1000 adds additional management capabilities and support for 10/100 Ethernet and Active Ethernet (power over Ethernet).

With ORiNOCO, attorneys at the patent law firm of Oppedahl & Larson LLP can remain ‘road warriors’ no matter where their work may take them

The Client: Oppedahl & Larson LLP is a law firm offering patent, copyright, trademark, trade secret, and other intellectual property services. The firm uses wireless networking in the offices as well as in the two partner’s homes. The public office and the two home offices are connected by a point-to-point microwave WAN.

The Opportunity: While wired networks have served the firm well, they began to realize that when their people traveled, they would need to have 802.11b cards in their notebook computers. They investigated the ORiNOCO RG-1000 gateways and PC cards and found them to offer “a reliable and cost-effective way to provide mobility within their office and homes, augmenting their existing wired networks,” says Carl Oppedahl, one of the partners of the patent firm.

Oppedahl says that the “ORiNOCO product affords the partners mobility in the office.” For example, “often I’ll be working at my desk, and I’ll realize I need information from somewhere else. With the RG-1000, I can take my computer down the hall, type in what I need, and carry my computer back to my desk. Last week, I was leaving the office, and I was all the way to the parking lot when I heard the computer beep saying a new email had come in. I was able to check it right then and there. It turned out to be very important, and if I didn’t have the wireless networking, I wouldn’t have gotten it until the next day.”

He adds that “another advantage is that it gives the firm experience with the wireless cards so that when they travel to places that have wireless facilities, they’ll have their computers configured, ready to go, and operable in those settings.” This is all the more intriguing to the firm, now that wireless possibilities have extended beyond the obvious—airplanes, airports, and hotels—to facilities like Starbucks. The firm feels it’s enabling them to be prepared to work wirelessly in public spaces.

Each of the attorney’s homes has a wired network. Before they began using wireless products, the attorneys were limited to where they could work in their homes. They were confined to locations that had Ethernet jacks that connected to the LAN. The Lucent cards now enable the attorneys to move around their homes and work anywhere—regardless of where jacks are located. The attorneys will often work in their kitchens while drinking their morning coffee, and an hour later be working on the same notebook computer at their desk in their office. Oppedahl adds that the benefits of the RG-1000 will be even greater for those who don’t already have a wired network at home.

Oppedahl and Larson LLP are seeing many opportunities crop up for utilizing wireless connectivity. United Airlines will be providing 802.11b wireless networking in their Red Carpet lounges and waiting areas. Academic campuses are beginning wireless networks. Starbucks and Microsoft are joining forces to offer MobileStar Network’s wireless network in Starbucks coffee shops around North America. American Airlines provides wireless connectivity in some of its lounges, and Delta is expected to offer the service soon.

As a result of these new wireless opportunities, the law firm became very motivated to adopt our 802.11b wireless networking. Partners in the firm believe this will allow them expanded flexibility in the future, as it becomes even more easy to be wireless from more locations.

Oppedahl says, “having high speed networking available on the road will permit me to have usable virtual private network (VPN) access back to my office. There are things that I can’t do with my office network through a slow modem—such as access to our in-house large databases—that I will be able to do at locations that have high-speed wireless access points. So, my waiting time at airports will be more efficient. Wireless accessibility will enable me to do work that I wouldn’t have been able to do otherwise.”

Benefits: The ORiNOCO wireless system frees the laptop computer from needing an Ethernet cable when connecting to a wired LAN. The user can simply connect the RG-1000 access point to the wired Ethernet, plug an ORiNOCO silver card into a PCMCIA slot of the laptop computer, and the laptop is up and running on the network.

Even better, multiple notebook computers that are equipped with 802.11b cards can simultaneously connect with the RG. The RG-1000 simply serves as a bridge between the two Ethernet networks. It passes the Ethernet packets back and forth between the wired Ethernet “cloud” and the wireless Ethernet “cloud.”

Oppedahl describes an exciting travel application of this technology: “I now only pick hotels that have high-speed internet access. It is still usually only provided in the guest room. But I take a Residential Gateway (RG-1000) with me, plug it into the jack, and others in my party can be in the other room and use my internet connection. This provides an easy way for people traveling together to conveniently share files and share one connection to the Internet.”

Why ORiNOCO?: The ORiNOCO SOHO solution is the world’s first wireless “LAN in a box,” providing the fastest wireless connection with LAN and Internet. It is easy to install, inexpensive, flexible, and compatible with other wireless devices. Inside the RG-1000 is an ORiNOCO Silver PCMCIA card and an additional circuit board. It has an Ethernet port, a wireless port, and a modem port. It provides a V.90 modem, a PPP dialer, a NAT server, a DHCP server, and a DHCP client. The Macintosh version of this equipment is called the Apple AirPort.
