Having been involved with Home Automation for several years and with the Internet for about 1 year, I am amazed at the recent growth in both industries. Before the Internet, the Home Automation industry struggled along in the back rooms of those of us determined to search out the information and products we needed. Information was limited to a few product catalogs and trade magazines. Much time and money was spent on long ... long distance telephone conversations trying to find just the right gadget to do the job we wanted.
Along comes the internet and of course (because Home Automation enthusiasts are curious about technology) we jumped on board. Lo and behold, there is a wealth of information and products that we never heard of before ... hallelujah! Where has all this great stuff been hiding. $20 / month (Internet access) gives us access to product information, technical support, competitive pricing, industry news and on and on.
Happily, the offshoot of this is a growing inventory of products and services available from around the world. Small companies can economically spread the word about their new products thereby conserving valuable resources to develop new ideas. Software can be Beta tested and upgraded at very low cost resulting in quicker development and a more stable finished product. Online catalogs can be updated daily with new offerings and promotions ... we no longer have to wait 3 months to find out what's new. And of course ... wide open competition brings down the prices for consumers.
Perhaps the most exciting part of this evolution is the number of "newbies" discovering Home Automation. A large percentage of my Email is from people who have discovered Home Automation via the Internet and want to learn more and experiment with their houses. These people are excited and enthusiastic about the prospects and are amazed at the simplicity and low cost of basic Home Automation toys. Many are also interested in knowing more about "Middle and High End" systems namely where to get more information and who are the most reliable installers.
So ... what does this mean for you?
Consumers - Use the internet to research and expand your knowledge as well as find the best prices and features available to you.
Manufacturers - Use the internet to test products under development, evaluate consumer needs and promote new products by maintaining a dynamic web site and advertising on the web. Build an information network with your dealers.
Dealers and Installers - Get with it soon. Advertise your products and services and build a small website. Show and tell about what you've done and what you can do. The cost is less than those newspaper ads and you'll expand your customer base.
Consultants and Designers - Same advice as for Dealers. Where are you and what do you do?
Retail and Mail Order - Competition is fierce out there now. Continuous catalog updating, promotions and new product lines are essential. Consumers are on the verge of accepting secure credit card transactions on the internet as a way of life.
Oh, by the way, this newsletter is a great place to start your promotion !!! Blatant Plug :-)
