AN AUTOMATION CHRISTMAS STORY

By Tony Stewart

"The lights will time out and the security just armed. The family is safe and tonight won’t be harmed. The house is now quite and as I drift off to sleep I know in the morning I’ll awake with a beep."

It’s the night before Christmas and all through the house not a creature is stirring not even my mouse (that’s because the Internet is so busy I can’t log on)! To start the asleep mode all I need is a clap, then our family will settle down for the Christmas Eve nap.

The lights will time out and the security just armed. The family is safe and tonight won’t be harmed. The house is now quite and as I drift off to sleep I know in the morning I’ll awake with a beep.

Into the night no fear of the cost, temperature setback assures of no loss. Deeply we sleep our minds full of peace, tomorrow we’ll celebrate the birth in the East.

Late in the night I heard such a noise, could this be the bringer of toys? The TV snaps on before I arise, it’s hard to believe what I see with my eyes!

At the front door stands a fat man in red, I can’t believe I heard what he said. He asked to come in it’s the coldest of nights, and he asked for my help to automate some lights.

As he looks into the camera there’s a smile on his face, but surely this fat man has got the wrong place. But he calls me by name with a wink in his eye, It appears this fat man has got the right guy!

I reach for the telephone to speak to the door and advise the round man that I want to hear more. With the press of some phone keys the door opens wide, an into the foyer the man steps inside.

I’ll let the wife sleep this must be a dream, I’ll converse with the man and consider his scheme. A press of a button on my bedside keypad, turns on my hall lights which ain’t too bad!

As I enter to greet him I find to my surprise not just the fat man but some quite strange little guys. Now I’m a grown man with science on my side but now I wonder if my parents had lied!

I’m handed my coat and told we must go, by this fellow in red from his head to his toe. Outside is a sleigh and it’s parked in the street, it’s pulled by some deer with fur boots on their feet.

We get in and leave and I think that we flew, we really did at least I believe this is true. As we soared through the air a story unfolds and I hear the strangest of tales that’s ever been told.

I heard of the wish lists that the red man was mailed and I’m told that his helpers had tried and they failed. Tried oh they did and they really worked late. But never to learn how to automate.

So away we go with me and his boys, to fulfill these lists with technologies toys. The short guys were great and wired as I asked, we finished each list and completed each task.

Homes full of modes and each one just right, we worked on each list all through the night. From speakers to cameras and all in between, the list was impressive, you know what I mean.

Later that night we returned to my home, a look at the clock said I’d hardly been gone. I was offered a job the pay was quite good, or I could work part time whenever I could. I considered this offer the benefits were right, but I’d rather work at day than into the night.

I agreed to work next year for a reason my own, I want to go back and visit each home. To look at the families how their lives have improved and be sure that my install didn’t cause them to move.

Next year I’ll bring a team of my own. With the folks I’ll bring the jobs won’t take long. So fill out your lists and check each detail. Be sure to include brands that won’t fail.

I’ve ordered my suit and my beard will be white, if you’d like to meet me just stay up all night. Sooner or later I’ll work on your home, it’ll only take a short while and then we’ll be gone.

If you don’t want me coming then don’t send in your list, between me & my team nothing will be missed. We’ll automate your home if that’s your desire me and some short guys our tools are for hire!
