Echelon SHIPS Release 1.51 of LNS DEVELOPER’S KIT FOR WINDOWS®
LNS Plug-In Wizard for Visual Basic 5 Speeds Plug-in Development

PALO ALTO, Calif. August 25, 1998 Echelon Corporation (Nasdaq: ELON) today announced shipment of Release 1.51 of the LonWorks® Network Services (LNS) Developer’s Kit for Windows®, an update to its LNS operating system for the LonWorks control networking standard.

Control networks link sensors, actuators, and other control devices, much like LANs link PCs and printers in a data network. The LNS Developer’s Kit for Windows is used by device manufacturers to create and manage open, interoperable client/server control network applications. Operating on Microsoft Windows 95 or Windows NT operating systems, and on other embedded platforms, LNS offers network management for commissioning and maintaining control networks. Windows 95 and Windows NT client applications take advantage of Microsoft’s ActiveX® technology, allowing simple integration with rapid application development tools like Visual Basic® and DelphiTM.

Release 5.1 also includes the LNS Plug-In Wizard for Visual Basic 5. LNS Plug-ins are software components written by device manufacturers that simplify the configuration and calibration of their devices during installation or maintenance. The Wizard reduces the time required to develop Plug-ins, allowing manufacturers to bring their products to market faster and with less development effort. LNS Plug-ins can be invoked by any network management tool that implements the LNS Plug-in standard, including Echelon’s own Visio®-based LonMaker for Windows Integration Tool.

“LNS is used by more than 200 companies as the basis for their LNS Plug-ins and network management tools,” states Damian Inglin, LNS product marketing manager at Echelon. “LNS is the standard operating system for open, interoperable LonWorks control networks, and we are committed to adding additional features in response to the needs of our customers.”

The LNS Developer’s Kit for Windows is designed to install and manage all LonWorks devices, including devices that are LonMark® certified for interoperable applications. LNS simplifies LonMark device management by using Windows objects to represent the properties of the LonMark device.

Echelon’s LNS Developer’s Kit for Windows software, available worldwide from Echelon and its authorized distributors, lists for $9,995 (U.S.).
