QUESTION 1: (To give readers an idea of the scope of work involved.) What do you recommend as a standard cabling package for a modern home? Please list the components of the system and their uses. (i.e. Distribution Panel, Number of cables and types, outlets etc.)
ANSWER 1: The OnQ system is constructed using premium-grade cable to enhance performance and eliminate noise and interference. Using better cable permits for higher performance. AMP Inc recommends using quad shield RG 6 for video distribution, Category 5 for telecom and data distribution, Category 3 for security and heating control.
QUESTION 2: (To educate readers on what can be expected) What systems would connect and interact via the cabling now and in the future?
QUESTION 3: (To establish a baseline ballpark cost) Do you have rule of thumb installed costs for this standard (i.e. $/sq ft. or $/room etc.)? How much more does it cost for retrofit?
ANSWER 3: For a turnkey base system, we would recommend the OnQ Base Package at an estimated ballpark of $500-750.
QUESTION 4: How futureproof is an installation as described here? What could be added to the system (in order of priority) to extend it's life and scope?
ANSWER 4: OnQ is a structured wiring system - the same type of system that major corporations use for their data networks and telephones. All your incoming services, such as cable TV, telephone, and Internet access, come to the OnQ Service Center. From the Service Center, cables run directly to outlets located throughout the house. Not only does this increase reliability, it makes upgrades to the system simple and easy.
QUESTION 5: Can I just get the electrician to install your cabling and components? If not why not and who do I call?
ANSWER 5: Qualified AMP OnQ installers are listed on the OnQ web site at www.amponq.com/
QUESTION 6: What makes your system unique in the marketplace?
ANSWER 6: OnQ is the only "complete" system in the industry. The OnQ Service Center receives, organizes and distributes the services. RG-6 and Category 5 cabling ensure the services can reach the rooms. And proper outlets allow you to plug into those services. The OnQ Home Wiring System provides the electronic foundation necessary to ensure that your home can be connected to today's services and prepared for new technologies.
