Technology analysts predict the home automation market will experience an explosion of growth over the next several years. To prepare for the technology expected to penetrate the residential marketplace, it is essential that homes are structurally prepared.

Analysts forecast that consumer sales of home automation/system products will boom from the current $2 billion market to $20 billion by the year 2005. It is critical that there is a clear understanding of the necessity for a stable and structured wiring infrastructure, serving as a home’s communication foundation, to support these products. Structured wiring systems will be vital to homeowners hoping to ride the wave of the "Home Automation Revolution."

In the very near future, residential wiring will provide the critical link to in-home networking, allowing homeowners to take full advantage of available technologies and provide them with ultimate home technology control.

Lucent Technologies’ HomeStarâ Wiring System is an example of this type of advanced structured wiring. It integrates both telecommunication and home automation technologies. The system allows simultaneous operation of interactive entertainment, personal communications, home security, environmental management systems and much more. Previous home wiring methods required one wiring system dedicated for phone lines, another for home security and yet another for home entertainment systems and CATV. HomeStarâ manages all of these technologies in one wiring solution.

Connected with the same high-speed professional wiring used in commercial installations around the world, HomeStar provides clear and uninterrupted data transfer – a significant benefit to the ever-increasing number of Internet users, telecommuters, work-at-home professionals, and homeowners with more than one PC. HomeStar also provides a fast and reliable in-home network for voice communication, home entertainment systems, whole-house video and satellite distribution, and electronic mail. The product also exceeds the cabling requirements mandated by the EIA/TIA (Electronic Industries Association/Telecommunications Industry Association), as well as being CSA (Canadian Standards Association) certified.

An advanced wiring infrastructure in our homes means convenient lifestyles for its users. HomeStar will enable a homeowner to monitor the baby’s room from any other room within the house and watch the latest movie rental or satellite TV programs from any television set. Lucent’s wiring system also allows users to identify who is at the front door simply by turning to a dedicated channel on the television. Structured wiring systems, like HomeStar, give homeowners complete control and management of their technology needs. Individuals and families now have a flexible wiring architecture that can be designed to fit a particular household size, budget and needs. For example, HomeStar enables homeowners to choose the number of video outlets in the entertainment room or phone lines in the home office.

There are three main components to the HomeStarWiring System: the Service Center, distribution cables and multi-access outlets. The Service Center acts as the "brain" for the system. This piece of hardware, discreetly located in the home, provides the central distribution point for all voice, data and video signals that travel through the system. Second, the distribution cables provide connections to home entertainment products such as televisions, VCRs and stereos, and telephone, lighting and security systems throughout the house. The final system components are multi-access outlets that resemble typical electrical outlets. However, their data and transmission capabilities are far above that of everyday electrical outlets. These outlets interconnect all of the televisions, VCR’s, computers, etc. to the HomeStar Wiring System.

The HomeStar Wiring System can easily provide the wiring capacity to handle all technology needs within the home. In addition, the system is compatible with and will handle additions of today’s technologies as well as those of tomorrow, eliminating the need for expensive rewiring in the future.
