Editorial - Bob HetheringtonWhew ... talk about opening a can of worms. Everybody seems to have an opinion about the future wireless home networking standard. 802.11 vs HomeRF is a topic that most of us wish would go away. But on the other hand there are many technical issues that need to be resolved ... and the marketplace may not be the place to do it. While it's true that there are many 802.11 products to choose from that does not necessarily make them the best solution. I will reserve judgement on that issue until I see what HomeRF 2.0 products (due on the shelves this fall) hold in store. In my opinion, the home network will be used more for entertainment and communication than it will for computing so I feel that the winner of this battle will be the group that provides the simplest, most economical and easiest to install products ... oh and they MUST BE FUN to use. Quite frankly ... networking computers isn't my idea of fun ... in fact it's usually a royal pain in the #*&^%^%. Nor do I think that the most important thing will be the ability to bring work home from the office ... NOT FUN. In any case, this issue is chock full of technical and promotional articles about both "Standards" so you can make your own judgements.

Extra special thanks to Wayne Caswell for pulling together several articles about Wireless Home Networking for this issue. Wayne's Mentor section is a good place to start if you are interested in how wireless networks are evolving.

The next issue theme is Home Office Networking + Powerline Home Networks. If you have any knowledge or ideas ... let's hear about them. New products launching ... new technologies emerging ... What's New and Important to the Home Automation and Networking world??? Share your knowledge and experience by sending an article to news@hometoys.com
