ECHELON’S NEW LONMAKER FOR WINDOWS 2.0
ENABLES MANAGEMENT OF CONTROL NETWORKS OVER THE INTERNET

Palo Alto, California –– March 18, 1999Echelon Corporation (NASDAQ: ELON), a leading provider of LonWorks® control network solutions worldwide, today announced the availability of Release 2.0 of the LonMaker for Windows Integration Tool. The new release adds the capability for users to monitor, control, manage, and maintain LonWorks control devices from anywhere in the world over the Internet, delivering large productivity increases and labor savings. LonMaker 2 will begin shipping this month, with availability through Echelon’s worldwide distribution sales channel.

The LonMaker tool can be used on a PC attached directly to a control network, to a local area network, or to the Internet. The user interface and functionality is identical in every case, reducing learning time while increasing flexibility and productivity. For example, using the new LonMaker tool, from his office a facility manager can check the status and perform diagnostics on control equipment in office buildings throughout the country and production plants throughout the world.

LonMaker 2 is the second generation of Echelon software that allows customers to design, install, and maintain multi-vendor, open, interoperable LonWorks control networks. This innovative software combines a powerful client-server architecture with a user interface based on the Visio technical drawing package that provides users with a sophisticated, cost-effective tool for integrating and maintaining control applications. Other enhancements in LonMaker 2 include:

  • New shortcuts that reduce engineering time by allowing reuse of common components and interfaces within a design;
  • New features that enable a PC to simultaneously monitor thousands of points on a network;
  • New automatic discovery and commissioning of devices which allows the LonMaker tool to be used as a production tool for complex embedded control networks such as those found in semiconductor fabrication equipment;
  • Twelve-times faster device-type definition that reduces start-up time for new networks.
  • Enhanced network variable binder that virtually eliminates connection resource limitations.

Based on Echelon’s LNS 2.0 network operating system, LonMaker 2 is compatible with the wide variety of third party LNS applications, including Echelon’s LNS DDE Server. When used with the LNS DDE Server, LonMaker users can easily integrate user interfaces created with third-party tools such as Wonderware InTouch , Intellution Fix Dynamics, USDATA FactoryLink , and National Instruments LabView.

"Since its introduction last year, the LonMaker tool has become the most widely used LNS based installation tool for LonWorks networks," said Rich Blomseth, Product Marketing Manager. "By incorporating Internet access and other new productivity enhancements, LonMaker 2 provides the most cost-effective solution yet for installing and maintaining control networks."

LonMaker 2 is Year 2000 compliant and compatible with Microsoft Windows 95, 98, and NT 4.0.
