ECHELON ANNOUNCES NEW ADDITIONS TO ITS
LONPOINT® SYSTEM
New products extend the cost advantages of open control networks

Palo Alto, California –– April 15, 1999 –– Echelon Corporation (NASDAQ: ELON), a leading provider of LonWorks® control network solutions worldwide, today announced the introduction of new additions to the LonPoint system: the DIO-10 Digital Input Output Interface Module and companion DIN Rail Base Plates. The LonPoint System is a family of products designed to integrate new and legacy sensors and actuators, as well as LonMark® devices, into cost-effective, open, interoperable control systems for building and industrial applications. In contrast to legacy control systems, which typically used hierarchical architectures based on costly, proprietary controllers, the LonPoint System offers a flat system architecture in which every point performs some control processing. Distributing the processing throughout the network lowers installation and life cycle costs, increases reliability by minimizing single points of failure, and provides the flexibility to cost-effectively adapt the system to a wide variety of applications.

The LonMark certified DIO-10 module combines digital sensor inputs and relay outputs in a compact, easily installed module. This combination of inputs and outputs makes the module well-suited to a wide range of applications, including conveyor control, tank level monitoring, lighting control, valve supervision, and alarm monitoring. "The DIO-10 module provides an open, cost-effective means of monitoring and controlling a wide range of building and factory automation devices," says Ken Weileder, product marketing manager. The DIO-10 module meets the LonMark interoperability guidelines, is U.L. Listed, cU.L. Listed, and carries the CE Mark.

The new DIN Rail Base Plates provide an economical, convenient means of mounting LonPoint modules, including the DIO-10, to a 35mm DIN rail. DIN rails are widely used for equipment mounting in Europe, and for industrial applications throughout the world. "The DIN Rail Base Plates allow an electrician to prewire the cabling prior to the installation of the LonPoint module, reducing the chance of equipment damage," states Weileder. "In addition, the DIN Rail Base Plates include a jumper plug that interconnects power and data connections between adjacent base plates without any cabling, reducing installation time and wiring mistakes."
