UPnP™ Technology Gains Momentum
Karen M. Stash, President - UPnP™ Implementers Corp

The mission of the UPnP Forum and the UPnP™ Implementers Corporation (UIC) is to enable new networked experiences for consumers and to create revenue opportunities for device companies. As described herein, the standards already adopted and certified provide an excellent foundation for this mission and the standards being created now will carry this mission into the future.

UPnP Forum

Since its inception in October 1999, the UPnP Forum has made great strides introducing UPnP technology and UPnP devices. Here are some examples of progress:

  • The UPnP Forum has over 550 members (www.UPnP.org) and continues to grow

  • An active Steering Committee of 20 companies meets regularly to draft, review, and complete UPnP device standards
  • 6 standards have been approved by the Steering Committee of the UPnP Forum:
    • Internet Gateway Device
    • AV Media Server
    • AV Media Renderer
    • Printer Device
    • Scanner
    • Basic Device
  • 4 standards are template design complete and/or are in the review process:
    • Security services
    • Digital (security) camera
    • Basic light device
    • HVAC
  • UPnP Implementers Corp (UIC; www.upnp-ic.org) has 30 members and 38 certified devices (and continues to grow)
  • UPnP summits have been well attended for 3 years, including one in Asia in 2002
  • SDKs for UPnP devices are available
  • Support for UPnP functionality is in Windows Me, XP, CE
  • Presentations and/or booths about UPnP technology have been at shows such as CES, WINHEC, IDF, and EHExpo

The UPnP technology has been well adopted and now companies are reaping the rewards of implementing UPnP technology. This is the result of 3 years of work by the UPnP Forum, which has resulted in the adoption of multiple device standards and the certification of UPnP devices.

Devices certified by the UIC are able to bear the UPnP logo and market their devices as "UPnP certified devices". The UIC is now increasing its marketing activities to showcase these certified devices.

In conclusion, the mission of the UPnP Forum and the UPnP™ Implementers Corporation (UIC) is to enable new networked experiences for consumers and to create revenue opportunities for device companies. As described above, the standards already adopted and certified provide an excellent foundation for this mission and the standards being created now will carry this mission into the future.
