Solid State Light (SSL) Projectors

Rich McPherson, Senior Product Manager of Projectors | NEC Display

Give us a quick background on NEC Display.

Tell us a bit about how Solid State Light Source Projectors (SSL) work.

There are many methods and designs for SSL projector technology. They range from LED (Red, Green, Blue), Laser/LED (Blue Laser, Red, Green LED), Laser/Phosphor (Blue Laser, Phosphor) and RGB Laser (Individual RGB lasers).

Why do you feel laser is the future light source for the projector industry.

Laser projectors offer longevity, constant brightness and lower maintenance costs which all help positively impact their future in the projector industry.

How does this technology bring a professional installer new applications to target and potential new revenue streams.

Lamp-based projection systems have some installation limitations ranging from their overall inability to be tilt-free and/or portrait orientation and they also are limited when long usage hours are needed. With laser projector technology,  having the longer usage hours is the number one advantage when looking at their use within new verticals.

You have recently introduced two new laser phosphor projectors to your professional installation lineup. Tell us about them.

Both projectors overall design concept of Laser/Phosphor could be considered the same even though they have many differences. The NP-PH1202HL is developed based on our industry leading integration feature set with multiple digital inputs and digital loop out.  This projector also includes internal tile matrix capabilities, tilt free and portrait orientation along with a host of other features. Our other new projector is the NP-PH1201QL.  This projector has a4K native resolution which creates highly dynamic images for design companies. The attributes of SSL technology coupled with 12K lumens makes both of these projectors  desirable for digital signage applications where seamless images are required.

Where do you see this technology going?  Do you see it changing the way all projectors are manufactured or is there still a need for your more common lamp projector.

Lamp based projection systems are still in development and will be available for years to come but SSL technology is important in the future development of projectors. Customers understand the many advantages of SSL technology and are pushing manufacturers to make them available across the projector spectrum. SSL technology is currently available with NEC’s integration projectors and we will continue to be a leader in the development of projection technology.
