Monetization of Connected Homes

Rapid transformation continues to shape the Connected Homes Market in North America. Shifting technologies; intense competition; and growing consumer expectations have placed increased demands across the industry – on designers, manufacturers, installers and retailers.

The purpose of this study is to increase our understanding of new market entrants; rising consumer demand and willingness to pay; potential areas for growth; and select business models used by the industry to optimize revenue.

What is CABA?

The Continental Automated Buildings Association (CABA) (www.caba.org) is a not-for-profit industry association dedicated to the advancement of intelligent home and intelligent building technologies in North America.

The organization is supported by an international membership of nearly 400 companies involved in the design, manufacture, installation and retailing of products relating to home automation and building automation. Public organizations, including utilities and government are also members.

How old is the organization?

This year, 2013, represents the 25th anniversary of the organization. The organization was originally founded in 1988 as the Canadian Automated Buildings Association. The founding members included Bell Canada, Bell-Northern Research, Ontario Hydro, Hydro-Québec, Consumers Gas, Canadian Home Builders’ Association, the Electrical and Electronic Manufacturers Association of Canada, Industry Canada, Minto Developments Inc. and the National Research Council of Canada.

What is the organization's mandate?

CABA's mandate includes providing its members with networking and market research opportunities. CABA also encourages the development of industry standards and protocols, and leads cross-industry initiatives.

What is the latest research the organization is undertaking?

CABA, through its Connected Home Council, has launched a collaborative research study entitled “Monetization of Connected Homes”.

What is the purpose of the research?

The purpose of the Landmark study is to improve our understanding of consumer attitudes towards home automation, to explore business models currently in use by industry participants and importantly, to identify areas of potential for maximizing profit.

In particular, using data collected from North American consumers and industry participants, the report will highlight:

  • What North American consumers ‘really want’ in home automation. What are they are willing to pay for? How much are they willing to pay?
  • What are current attitudes towards home automation?
  • What home automation features appeal to consumers? What are consumer expectations? What about future interest?
  • How connected are consumers?
  • What features of home automation are considered unique by the industry? Why?
  • How can we increase the value placed on home automation by consumers – both users and non-users? How does this vary by age, income, education level?
  • What are growth expectations for companies?
  • Who are the new entrants to the market? What is the impact on competitors?
  • How does industry meet challenges such as increased competition or enhancing consumer adoption?
  • What business models do companies currently use? Why?  What are current implementation strategies?

What approach will CABA undertake toward the research?

The methodology used in this study will be based on a combination of research methods. Primary research will be conducted with North American consumers using an on-line survey of approximately 1,000 participants.  As well, in-depth interviews will be conducted with a wide range of industry participants.  Secondary research, including a select review of existing studies, will be used as a point of comparison and to enhance our overall understanding.

Who will conduct the research study?

CABA has contracted IHS Electronics & Media to undertake the research and expects the study to be completed by October 2013. The study is a major initiative of the CABA Research Program, which offers a range of opt-in technical and advisory research services designed to provide industry stakeholders with collaborative research and R&D opportunities.
