The future of 3D will grow with more engaging content (movies/games) and the effects/experience of 3D to be even immersive (almost like a virtual reality experience). And we (Mitsubishi) continue our trend of making the 3D experience even more engaging (i.e. our recent example of our HC7800D implementation of 3D).
3D Projection Technology
Interview with Wayne Kozuki | Mitsubishi Electric Visual Solutions America, Inc.
How is the market for 3D projectors expanding and what do you expect for the next few years?
The number of movies filmed in 3D is growing as well as the number of movies that have been converted from 2D to 3D to boost their box office appeal. And since the smash hit “Avatar”, many more films were shot in 3D, including “Alice in Wonderland,” “Pirates of the Caribbean,” and “The Green Hornet.” This year, many more are coming to theaters while old movies are now available in 3D Blu-ray discs for home enjoyment. And with the increasing popularity of this medium, more people want to enjoy the bold images of 3D on a large screen at home. As a result, the 3D projector market is expanding. We are seeing more and more models being offered with support for 3D…and for the next few years will continue to see a models offering support for 3D as a standard/base feature of solutions.
What are some of the new technologies that are further improving the product offerings?
Universal 3D glasses, those that allow a single pair of glasses to support multiple 3D sources, is a hot topic for our industry right now, and will make the 3D experience more economical.
What’s new and exciting about the HC9000D projector in particular and where are they available for sale?
Our HC9000D has been receiving some great reviews; it boasts amazing image quality and color reproduction. Mitsubishi is known for our image quality and reliability, in which we take great pride. As far as where to buy, we sell the HC9000D to select CEDIA Distributors, who in turn sell to home theater dealers. We encourage people to go to our website and click on the “Where to Buy” option for a local dealer.
Is it easy to install? Do you recommend a professional do the job?
Yes, it’s easy to install. The HC9000D is equipped with motorized lens shift (both vertical and horizontal) giving users/installers a lot of flexibility when it comes to installation.
Do you have an optimal room dimensional layout and screen size that is recommended for the HC9000D and other 3D systems?
The image size range is from 50”-200” measured diagonally, so for a 110” diagonal image the HC9000D lens can be 23 inches to 12.5 feet away from the screen, which is a wide range of options.
What is crosstalk, and how does the HC7800D handle it?
When viewing a 3D source on a 3DTV or 3D projector (3D glasses dependent) without glasses, a double-image or image ghost (often blurry image) is experienced. Blurriness in the 3D image will be greater in instances where the augmented visual depth is greater (i.e.: when viewing a 3D image of a landscape or an image with large linear difference such as a hallway, for example). However, when the 3D glasses are worn, if you still see ghosting (or doubling of the image), THAT is crosstalk.
How do your proprietary glasses make the HC7800D image better?
Our high speed HC7800D DLP projector, when paired with our new high speed 3D glasses, is the key to help eliminating annoying cross talk effects. Our new datasheet on our HC7800D identifies some key points that help eliminates crosstalk. We use ultra-quick LCD panels in the glasses, so the response time is much faster…i.e., only 0.3ms when both shutters are closed, versus 3ms of typical LCD shutter panels. Our HC7800D is compatible only with our high performance glasses, but that’s what makes our performance so stellar.
Where does 3D projection go from here into the future and how does Mitsubishi stay in the forefront of new product development?
The future of 3D will grow with more engaging 3D movies and games, and the effects and experience of 3D will be even more immersive, almost like a virtual reality experience. And Mitsubishi will continue making the most exciting, dynamic and WOW 3D display experience with our projectors and TVs.
